Overview

This standard is about the importance of health and safety for participants, your colleagues and yourself in the active leisure environment and how you contribute to this.

The main outcomes of this standard are:

  1. help to control risks in the active leisure environment

  2. help to safeguard and protect participants

  3. follow emergency procedures

  4. help to maintain and clean facilities and equipment          

This standard is for all staff working in health and fitness, sport and outdoor activity environments.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

​Help to control risks in the active leisure environment

  1. identify the key legal requirements that are relevant to health and safety in the workplace

  2. identify aspects of your job role and work which could harm you or others

  3. comply with legal requirements to ensure the health and safety of all colleagues and customers

  4. assess and control risks using legal requirements and organisational procedures

  5. deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved.

Help to safeguard and protect participants

6. identify the legal requirements for your job role that are in place to protect children and vulnerable adults.  

  1. follow correct working practice to ensure the protection of children and vulnerable adults

8. Identify safeguarding issues in line with relevant advice and guidance on protecting children and vulnerable adults

  1. take immediate action when you have concerns about the safety of children or vulnerable adults. 

Follow emergency procedures

10. identify your organisations procedures when dealing with an emergency

  1. carry out your role in the emergency procedure calmly and correctly

  2. maintain the safety of the participants involved

13. follow the organisational procedures for reporting an emergency

14. Identify and follow the legal and organisational procedures for the maintenance and cleaning of facilities and equipment

  1. carry out your role in the maintenance and cleaning of facilities and equipment safely and effectively

  2. follow the legal and organisational procedures for reporting areas that may cause harm to yourself or others.


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

1. the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere

  1. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role

  2. specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability

  3. methods of assessing and controlling risks

5. the possible signs, symptoms, indicators and behaviours that may cause concern with reference to safeguarding

  1. how to maintain the safety of the participants involved in an emergency

7. how to carry out your role without causing disruption to normal operating procedures
