Assist with day make-up
Overview
This standard is about assisting a senior member of staff and carrying out a supervised natural day make-up. You will need to be able to prepare for the make-up, perform the skin analysis and use consultation techniques. You will also need to be able to carry out basic make-up application. The service will also involve checking the finished effect is to the satisfaction of the senior member of staff and the client.
To carry out this standard you will need to maintain effective health, safety and hygiene throughout your work. You will also need to maintain your personal appearance and good communication and consultation skills.

Performance criteria
You must be able to:
Maintain safe and effective methods of working when assisting with day make-up
1. maintain your responsibilities for health and safety throughout the make-up service
- follow the senior member of staff's instructions throughout the service and seek assistance when necessary
3. set up the work area to meet organisational procedures
4. check the environmental conditions are suitable for the client and the service
5. ensure your personal hygiene, protection and appearance meets accepted industry and organisational requirements
6. clean all tools and equipment following organisational requirements
7. disinfect your hands prior to applying make-up
8. position equipment and materials for ease and safety of use
9. ensure your own posture and position minimises fatigue and the risk of injury whilst working
dispose of waste materials following salon requirements
carry out the service within a commercially viable time
leave the work area in a condition suitable for further services
Consult, plan and prepare for make-up services
use consultation techniques to determine the client's requirements within the limits of your responsibility
ensure signed parent or guardian consent before treating a minor prior to any service
ensure that a parent or guardian is present throughout the service for minors under the age of 16
ask your client questions to identify if they have any contra-indications to day make-up and record your client's responses
position and prepare the client to meet the needs of the agreed make-up plan
cleanse, tone and moisturise the client's skin prior to the application of make-up
recognise and record the client's skin type
select and prepare make-up products to suit the client's skin type and their preferences
Apply day make-up
use make-up products following manufacturers' and a senior member of staff's instructions
apply foundation and concealer to create an even skin tone
apply powder to achieve the desired finish
apply eye products to enhance the eye area, eyebrows and eyelashes
apply cheek products to enhance the client's natural colouring
apply lip products to enhance the client's lips
ensure that the finished result and look is to the client's and senior member of staff's satisfaction
give your client advice and recommendations on the service provided
ensure the client's records are completed and signed by the client and a senior member of staff
