Overview

​This standard is about your ability to create a variety of bespoke hair pieces. This includes the creation of facial hair pieces, wigs, hairpieces and extensions. You will be required to understand the different types of hair and base materials available and carry out the different wig making and knotting techniques in order to produce a bespoke added hair piece. You will also be required to know how to create movement, curl and colour effects within the added hair piece you have created and how to maintain or adjust the hair piece.  This standard is applicable for all roles and requires prior training in hairdressing .


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

​1. follow legal requirements and other relevant standards, insurance guidelines and, organisational protocols when creating a bespoke added hair piece
2. maintain your responsibilities for health safety, hygiene and welfare of the individual and yourself before, during and after the service
3. carry out a concise and comprehensive consultation with the individual to determine their requirements and suitability for a bespoke added hair piece, taking into account a range of factors to include:
3.1 desired objectives, style, length and colour
3.2 skin and scalp condition
3.3 head size and face shape
3.4 skin tone and existing hair colour
3.5 the existing hair type, texture and density
3.6 hair growth patterns
3.7 recognition of existing hair loss condition and their prognosis
3.8 consideration of individual’s lifestyle
3.9 budgetary constraints
3.10 use of natural or artificial hair
3.11 types of wig base and hair extensions available
3.12 types of attachments to be used
3.13 contraindications to the service
3.14 health and wellbeing of the individual
4. agree and confirm the final design brief, including base type, hair type and colour to be used, style, length, costs and timelines for creation of the bespoke added hair piece
5. outline what reasonable adjustments may be needed to personalise the finished bespoke added hair piece
6. select and prepare a range of tools and equipment required to create the bespoke added hair piece
7. record measurements of the scalp circumference and make a template of the area of the scalp to be covered
8. select and sew the desired base material following the template and measurements, and secure attachment points
9. prepare the added hair to be used, ensuring it is root to point correct and secured between a drawing mat
10. create the bespoke added hair piece using knotting or wefting techniques to meet the design brief, taking into account
10.1 the combination and placement of different coloured added hair
10.2 the direction and density of hair placement
10.3 inclusion and position of attachments
11. carry out appropriate cutting techniques to create the desired shape and style to meet the design brief for the bespoke added hair piece
12. use appropriate techniques and equipment to style or chemically process the bespoke added hair piece to meet the design brief
13. use appropriate techniques to dye the bespoke added hair piece to meet the design brief
14. fit the bespoke added hair piece and confirm with the individual that the bespoke added hair piece meets the agreed design brief and make reasonable adjustments to personalise the finished look if required
15. advise the individual of the aftercare and maintenance requirements for the bespoke added hair piece to maintain longevity
16. carry out maintenance of the bespoke added hair piece to include
16.1 cleansing and restyling
16.2 fixing damaged areas
16.3 adjusting size and fit
16.4 repositioning and securing
16.5 removal
17. complete the individuals’ records and store in accordance with data legislation
18. refer the individual to other professionals as required based on the consultation outcomes


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

​1. the legal requirements and other relevant standards, insurance guidelines and, organisational protocols when creating bespoke hair pieces
2. how to maintain your responsibilities for the health, safety and welfare of the individual and yourself before, during and after the service
3. the types of added hair available, their benefits, limitations and ethical considerations
4. how to source added hair and liaise with suppliers
5. how to record and evaluate the consultation factors to meet the individuals requirements and inform suitability for the bespoke added hair piece chosen, to include:

7. the types of reasonable adjustments that can be carried out to personalise the finished look and the limitations and extent of the alterations that can be made
8. the range and uses of tools and equipment that can be used to create the bespoke added hair piece
9. how to take measurements of the scalp circumference and make a template of the area of the scalp to be covered
10. how to create a base following the template and measurements and how and where to secure attachment points
11. why the added hair to be used must be prepared before use, why it must be point to root correct and how to secure between a drawing matt
12. the techniques required to create the range of bespoke added hair pieces to meet the design brief, taking into account
12.1 the combination and placement of different coloured added hair
12.2 the direction and density of hair placement
12.3 inclusion and position of attachments
13. the cutting techniques that can be used to create the desired shape and style, their limitations and how to carry these out on a bespoke added hair piece
14. the techniques and equipment used to create the desired texture or curl to meet the design brief and the limitations of these relating to hair type and use of heat or chemical processing.
15. the techniques and equipment used to alter the colour of the bespoke added hair piece, and the limitations of these
16. the importance of ensuring the finished bespoke added hair piece meets the design brief and how to carry out any reasonable adjustments to meet the individuals requirements to personalise the finished look.
17. how to fit and store the finished bespoke added hair piece
18. the type of advice to give the individual in order to maintain the bespoke added hair piece to include:
18.1 frequency and methods of cleansing and conditioning
18.2 use and limitations of products for cleansing, conditioning, styling and finishing
18.3 use and limitations of heated styling and finishing
18.4 how to store removable bespoke added hair pieces
18.5 when to return for further maintenance
19. how to carry out maintenance of the bespoke added hair piece to include
19.1 cleansing and restyling
19.2 fixing damaged areas
19.3 adjusting size and fit
19.4 repositioning and securing
19.5 removal
20. the type of information required to complete the individuals’ records and store in accordance with data legislation
