Overview


This standard is about the competence that advanced practitioners require to develop an individualised programme to inform performance using coaching pedagogy. A person-centred and individualised programme is a fundamental aspect that an advanced practitioner must consider and develop for participants to achieve their specific needs. These needs could relate to health, fitness, sport and/or performance related objectives. Each programme is tailored to the participants individual needs, goals and objectives to optimise their potential, they are consistent with the principles of periodisation and aligned with credible evidence-based coaching pedagogies/andragogy’s.
It applies to planning person-centred and individualised programmes for both groups and individuals. 

This standard is for all advanced practitioners that have responsibility for a range of participants with specific requirements, where advanced levels of knowledge and technical skills are required.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:


1. select a suitable environment to interact with the participants and others to discuss and explore the participants needs, goals and objectives
2. communicate with the participant and others appropriate to their understanding, preferences and needs
3. develop a positive motivational climate to support the psychological needs and empower participants in decision making
4. discuss the specific programme with the participant and how it can help optimise their potential
5. implement a comprehensive review of the participants’ current performance, training programmes and any other challenges that could affect progress
6. liaise with other professionals from your own and other disciplines that are relevant to your work or have the potential to contribute where appropriate
7. assess the participants overall needs and goals, taking into account their objectives and key achievements throughout the programme
8. encourage the participant to articulate and understand possible goals appropriate to their needs, ability and potential 
9. conduct a gap analysis as part of your review
10. design individualised programmes that are consistent with the principles of periodisation and aligned with evidence-based coaching pedagogies/andragogy’s 
11. obtain agreement from the participants and others to the programme design
12. identify and agree required transformational coaching strategies to achieve the individual participant’s programme
13. agree suitable review points and evaluative methods with participants and others
14. complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
15. operate within your scope of practice and in accordance with the guidelines
16. follow current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:


1. the most suitable environments to interact with participants and others to discuss and explore their needs
2. methods of differentiating in order to respond to participants different learning and communication preferences
3. the importance of empowering the participants to take a level of autonomy and independence in their programme design
4. relevant theories that support motivational climate
5. the importance of motivational climate and the impact this has on participants
6. how to analyse information gathered from the participants using a person-centred approach
7. other professionals available from your own and other disciplines that can support your work with participants
8. how to develop communication protocols with other professionals
9. the importance of effective goal setting
10. how to develop an effective goal setting strategy
11. the principles of designing a periodised programme which is specific to an individual needs, is inclusive and promotes sustainability
12. methods of conducting a gap analysis and its importance to the overall programme design
13. the different approaches including pedagogy/andragogy and their application to designing an individualised programme
14. relevant theories of human and social development, physical literacy and models of psychology involved in planning individualised programmes
15. the importance of obtaining agreement from the participants and others to the individualised programme
16. types of transformational coaching strategies 
17. the importance of agreeing suitable review points in the programme
18. the types of evaluative methods available and how they link to the participants overall needs 
19. how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
20. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities, and accountability as it applies to your job role
21. current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
