Commission electronic security systems
Overview
This NOS sets out the skills, knowledge and understanding for you to commission electronic security systems.
This NOS covers the following activities:
- Commission electronic security systems taking cognisance of operational requirements and standards required by other agencies.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1 identify the presence of electrical supply, into and inside, electronic security systems equipment in a safe manner that complies with the current regulatory requirements and industry best practice
P2 isolate incoming supply to electronic security systems in a safe manner that complies with the current regulatory requirements and industry best practice
P3 confirm the installation complies with the specification and significant requirements of other agencies
P4 make sure you have all the relevant documents and information you need to commission systems
P5 commission systems in accordance with the specification
P6 take suitable action to minimise potential disruption to customers' and other relevant third parties' normal work activities
P7 take action to deal with any problems that may arise during commissioning operations
P8 complete commissioning documents in accordance with the specification
P9 confirm that system is ready for handover
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
K1 current relevant legislation, regulations, standards and codes of practice relating to the commissioning of electronic security systems
K2 what information you need to confirm systems are ready to be commissioned, and from where you get this information
K3 how to confirm that systems and their performance meet the specification
K4 the operation of the systems that you commission
K5 the processes and procedures you must use to bring systems into operation, and why you must apply them, including completing commissioning documents and compliance with significant requirements of other agencies
K6 how to communicate and work with other people
K7 what actions you can take to minimise disruption to customers and third parties
K8 what action you can take to deal with problems that arise during commissioning operations
K9 why you need to identify the presence of electrical supply and how it can be isolated safely
K10 sufficient relevant transmission and system components theory for you to interpret the results of the tests you carry out
K11 the technical knowledge and experience required to safely isolate an electrical supply including:
(a) adequate knowledge of electricity;
(b) adequate experience of the electrical work being carried out;
(c) adequate understanding of the system to be worked on and practical experience of that class of systems
(d) understanding of the hazards which may arise during the work and the precautions which need to be taken;
(e) the ability to recognise at all times whether it is safe for work to continue.
Scope/range
Competency must be demonstrated in two of the seven areas including at least one of the core areas:

Glossary
In these National Occupational Standards;
Electronic security systems: a generic term that includes: intruder, fire, cctv, access, remote monitoring systems and other types of protective installations. It also encompasses the integration of existing and new systems.
electrical supply systems: supply to the system components, such as primary and secondary supplies
specification: the specific detail containing design, installation, commissioning or maintenance requirements
systems: a set of components working together as an interconnecting network. For example (but not exhaustive) new installations; extensions; modifications
transmission: the means by which system components communicate. This includes, for example: wired, wireless, Bluetooth, networking
