Overview

This NOS is for community wardens and sets out the skills, knowledge and understanding for you to safeguard children, young people and vulnerable adults in the community with which you are working.

his NOS covers the following activities:


  • Take action to address safeguarding concerns
  • Report and record safeguarding concerns.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

**     Take action to address safeguarding concerns**
1. communicate with vulnerable people in a way that is appropriate to their age, understanding and preference  2. identify safeguarding issues in line with relevant advice and guidance on protecting vulnerable people 3. take immediate action when you have concerns about the safety of a vulnerable person  ** Report and record safeguarding issues ** 4. report accurate information about what has happened to appropriate people without delay 5. complete any required documents in line with organisational and legal procedures and pass these to the relevant people within agreed timescales 

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the various definitions, including legal, of children, young people and other vulnerable individuals
  2. legislation which relates to working with vulnerable people including:
    2.1 information sharing, confidentiality and consent
    2.2 the provision of services
    2.3 children's and adult's rights
    2.4 anti-discriminatory practice
    2.5 child protection and safeguarding
    2.6 statutory supervision requirements
    2.7 definitions and types of vulnerability
    2.8 consent in relation to sexual activity
  3. relevant advice and guidance on protecting vulnerable people
  4. how abuse may be expressed by a vulnerable person
  5. how to identify, recognise and respond to changes in behaviour that may indicate abuse
  6. how to alter communication for different needs, contexts and beliefs
  7. how vulnerable people communicate by behaviour, as well as through language
  8. how different forms of behaviour can be interpreted
  9. the effects of environments and contexts on communication
  10. how to check understanding with an individual who may have difficulty in expressing themselves
  11. the various agencies involved in safeguarding issues and how to contact them
