Overview

This standard is about packing fragile and non-fragile items. It includes identifying the items to be packed, using tools and equipment correctly, and wrapping or packing items using the relevant packaging materials. It also includes disposing of waste materials, and maintaining health, safety and security.

This standard is relevant to all operatives at every level in logistics operations.  Operatives could, for example, be working in warehousing and storage, removals or transport.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. confirm with the customer the fragile and non-fragile items being packed
  2. identify and use the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) relevant to the packing requirements
  3. use the relevant tools and operate equipment in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and organisational procedures
  4. confirm that suitable wrapping or packaging is selected for the fragile and non-fragile items in accordance with the item, organisational procedures and the relevant export procedures
  5. protect the fragile and non-fragile items while they are being wrapped or packed
  6. wrap or pack the fragile and non-fragile items using the required materials and minimising wastage
  7. label the packaged fragile and non-fragile items, where required
  8. dispose of different types of waste materials in accordance with the relevant legislation and organisational procedures
  9. identify any health, safety and security issues relating to the wrapping or packing of fragile and non-fragile items, and respond in accordance with organisational procedures
  10. identify and respond to issues with wrapping or packing the fragile and non-fragile items
  11. record the wrapping and packaging of goods in accordance with organisational procedures
  12. comply with organisational procedures and the relevant environmental, legal, safety and operating requirements relating to the wrapping and packing of fragile and non-fragile items

You need to know and understand:

  1. the sources and types of information about the fragile and non-fragile items being wrapped and packed, including the information relevant to health, safety and security, environmental factors and any relevant export procedures
  2. the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that should be used when wrapping and packing goods in logistics operations
  3. the types of wrapping and packing material available for fragile and non-fragile items, and what these are used for
  4. the relevant tools and equipment used for wrapping and packing fragile and non-fragile items
  5. how to wrap and pack different types of fragile and non-fragile items without damaging them
  6. how to minimise the wastage of wrapping and packing materials
  7. the types of issues relating to wrapping and packing fragile and non-fragile items, including health, safety and security
  8. the roles and responsibilities of colleagues involved in the wrapping and packing of goods
  9. the recording systems used by the organisation and the requirements for maintaining records
  10. how to complete documentation and maintain records
  11. the organisational procedures and the relevant environmental, legal, safety and operating requirements relating to the wrapping and packing of fragile and non-fragile items
