Monitor goods in storage
Overview
This standard is about monitoring goods in storage. It involves collating information about the goods being stored, including the storage requirements, location and condition of goods, maintaining accurate inventory levels, tracking the movement of goods, identifying and resolving issues and overseeing the checking of stock.
This standard is relevant to those who are responsible for monitoring the storage of goods as part of their job role.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
1. maintain the health and safety of yourself and others at all times, in line with the relevant legislation and organisational requirements
2. assess the risks associated with the work before starting and throughout the activity, take action to minimise risks where possible or report in line with organisational procedures
3. confirm that the required personal protective equipment (PPE) for the work being carried out is worn at all times in line with organisational procedures
4. confirm that the relevant training has been received to carry out the work, recognise the limits of your competence and seek access to further training where required
5. obtain the relevant information on the goods being stored, the conditions required and the storage locations
6. monitor the location and condition of the goods being stored
7. confirm that the goods are stored according to organisational, legal and customer requirements
8. assess the relevant factors and risks of storing goods, including health and safety, security and biosecurity
9. monitor the accuracy of inventory levels and the tracking of the movement of goods
10. monitor stock replenishment and stock rotation in accordance with organisational procedures
11. maintain effective communication with colleagues when carrying out the work
12. oversee stock checks and maintain optimal stock levels
13. provide colleagues with the findings from the monitoring process and make recommendations
14. deal effectively with issues that arise within the scope and limitations of your responsibilities and competence and report issues which cannot be resolved, in line with organisational procedures
15. maintain and store the required records in line with relevant legal and organisational requirements

1. your responsibilities under the relevant health and safety legislation and organisational requirements
2. how to identify hazards and assess risks associated with the work being carried out, and the suitable control measures and Safe Systems of Work (SSoW) that can be put in place to reduce risks
3. the relevant personal protective equipment (PPE) that should be worn when monitoring goods in storage
4. the organisation’s policies and procedures and the relevant legal and organisational requirements relating to the storage of goods
5. how to obtain and check information on the storage of goods at storage locations
6. the procedure for checking the condition of the goods being stored
7. the procedure for checking inventory levels and the movement of goods
8. the organisational requirements for stock replenishment and stock rotation
9. the required optimal stock levels and the organisational procedures for stock checking
10. the roles and responsibilities of colleagues and why it is important to maintain effective communication with colleagues when carrying out your work
11. the types of issues and discrepancies that can occur with the storage of goods, actions to take and organisational procedures for reporting issues that cannot be resolved

Health and safety includes mental and physical wellbeing
Goods could include: containers; sealed loads or trailers; palletised goods; cages; individual boxes/packages; casks/kegs; bulk materials; liquids, powders or grains; food; temperature-controlled goods; livestock; hazardous goods; vehicles, plant or machinery; timber; customer’s removal goods; goods for return/repair etc
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) could include: high-visibility clothing, hard hats, protective clothing, eye protection, masks, gloves, safety footwear
Safe System of Work (SSoW) is a method of work that puts in place control measures arising from a risk assessment, in order to manage identified hazards, which are broken down into four elements: safe person; safe equipment; safe place; and safe practice.
Storage locations: temporary or permanent, ambient, temperature-controlled, dry, outdoors, indoors, ventilated, segregated, restricted access
