Overview

This standard is about operating equipment for logistics operations and covers the use of both mobile and fixed equipment. It includes identifying the equipment for the task, confirming it is safe to use and returning the equipment to its original position after use.

This standard is relevant to all operatives at every level in logistics operations. Operatives could, for example, be working in warehousing and storage, removals, transport or freight forwarding.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify the relevant equipment for the task to be undertaken within logistics operations
  2. identify and use personal protective equipment (PPE) relevant to the equipment, goods and the storage conditions
  3. confirm that the equipment is available, safe to use and operational
  4. prepare, adjust and operate the equipment in accordance with the relevant manufacturer's instructions, safety and work requirements
  5. monitor the equipment to maintain its safe operation, and record defects or damage to the equipment in accordance with organisational requirements
  6. identify and respond to issues while utilising the equipment, **in accordance with organisational requirements
  7. return the equipment securely to its designated position after use
  8. record the work carried out according to organisational procedures
  9. comply with organisational procedures and the relevant environmental, legal, safety and operating requirements relating to the operation of equipment

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the relevant equipment to use for the task to be carried out in your area of responsibility, in logistics operations
  2. the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that should be used when operating equipment for logistics operations
  3. the characteristics and capabilities of the equipment being used
  4. how to set up, adjust and operate the equipment for the task to be undertaken
  5. the common types of problems that may occur with the equipment you use and how to identify and respond to these
  6. the routine checks that are required before and after the use of equipment
  7. the relevant post-stop maintenance procedures for the equipment
  8. the relevant manufacturer's instructions, organisational procedures and practices for operating equipment for logistics operations
  9. the roles and responsibilities of colleagues when operating equipment
  10. the recording systems used by the organisation and the organisation's requirements for maintaining records
  11. the organisational procedures and the relevant environment, legal, safety and operating requirements relating to the equipment and its use
