Select and recommend methods for transporting goods
Overview
This standard is about selecting and recommending methods for transporting goods in international trade and logistics operations. You will need to understand the relevant national and international legislation for transporting goods and any special requirements needed by the goods being transported.
You will also need to be able to communicate with all those involved in or affected by the transportation of goods, and resolve any issues that may occur when selecting methods for transporting goods, in relation to contract compliance and legislation, within your responsibility.
This standard can be applied to any mode of transport or combination of modes, i.e. road, rail, air, sea or waterway.

Performance criteria
You must be able to:
Review all the relevant transportation instructions and details of the goods
being transported
- Identify and recommend the most suitable transport modes for the goods
- Select the relevant vehicles and containers for transporting the goods
- Recommend the most suitable transportation routes for the goods to reach their destination
- Select the most suitable combination of transport methods for the goods
- Identify any issues with selecting the transport methods, and take the required action to deal with these
- Report any changes in requirements for transporting goods to the stakeholder
- Report work activities and record them in the required information systems according to relevant statutory, regulatory, legislative and organisational procedures
- Comply with relevant national and international legislation, regulations and restrictions for different types and mixes of goods when transporting goods nationally and internationally
- Comply with all relevant health and safety, environmental, ethical, legislative, regulatory standards and organisational procedures when selecting transportation methods for goods

The relevant transportation instructions and details of goods being transported
The advantages and disadvantages of different transport modes and the impact they have on the environment
- The types of vehicles used in different transport modes

- The relevant trade terms and international standards for freight carriage, insurance and costs (Incoterms)
