Overview

This standard is about gathering the information required to undertake the routing and scheduling of loads, including using it to create delivery schedules. It involves collating information on timings and destinations of consignments and the type of vehicle required to carry the goods.

This standard is relevant to all those involved in the routing and scheduling of loads in logistic operations, for example, someone working in warehousing and storage, transport or freight forwarding.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. ​identify each consignment and obtain details of timings, routing and the destination for delivery and collection of the loads
  2. undertake the collation of consignments and identify sorting parameters for the delivery route, scheduling and collection of the loads
  3. confirm the method of transport and the types of vehicles and equipment to be used
  4. combine or break down consignments into manageable loads, considering driver and vehicle operating capacity
  5. record and communicate information on the load to the relevant colleagues and customers
  6. resolve problems with the combining of the consignments or the breaking down of goods into loads
  7. identify and report any consignments that cannot be combined or broken down into loads
  8. confirm the load and type of vehicle selected for delivery
  9. prioritise and optimise delivery and collection schedules to meet customer requirements
  10. make use of telematics according to the organisation's policies and procedures
  11. comply with the organisation's procedures and all the relevant legal, environmental, safety and operating requirements

You need to know and understand:

  1. the type of load and characteristics of consignments to be collected or delivered

  2. the types of vehicles to be used for carrying different loads

  3. the different modes of transport available
  4. the limitations of routes, vehicles, equipment and drivers, including the relevant vehicle weights and dimensions
  5. the methods of load distribution
  6. the types of sorting parameters relevant to the consignment, delivery route, scheduling and collection of the loads
  7. the environmental, economic and efficiency issues relating to the load and the vehicle
  8. the relevant legislation, regulations and codes of practice for the collection and delivery of loads
  9. the organisation's documentation systems and procedures for routing and scheduling of loads
  10. the operational and organisational procedures to be followed when resolving problems
  11. the sources of information relating to health, safety and environmental issues
  12. the sources of routing and scheduling information including telematics
  13. the importance of obtaining the details of timings, routing and the destination for delivery and collection of the loads
  14. operational and organisational procedures for handling loads that cannot be routed and scheduled
  15. the types of recording and documentation procedures used when undertaking the routing and scheduling loads
  16. the relevant legal, environmental, safety and operating requirements relating to the routing and scheduling of loads
