Overview
This standard is about assessing and monitoring warehousing and storage shelving and racking systems. It covers the regular assessment and monitoring as well as recording and reporting the assessment of shelving and racking systems
This standard is for a competent person who can undertake risk assessments and monitoring of shelving and racking systems. It does not cover the initial specification, design and erection of warehousing shelving and racking systems, or the cleaning. Cleaning is covered within SFLWS16. Visual inspections and damage reporting by warehouse operatives is covered within SFLWS16, SFLWS18 and SFLWS23.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- list the tasks, priorities and responsibilities for assessing and monitoring warehousing and storage shelving and racking systems within the logistics organisation
- identify the hazards associated with assessing and monitoring warehousing and storage shelving and racking systems, and carry out and record a risk assessment
- check that the shelving and racking systems are ready for assessment and monitoring
- report any circumstances that prevent the assessment and monitoring of shelving and racking systems
- assess the shelving and racking systems for any damage, defects or overloading, etc
- record the assessment in accordance with organisational procedures
- report the findings to those responsible for scheduling maintenance and repair of shelving and racking systems
- comply with organisational procedures and the relevant legal, environmental, health and safety, bio-security and operating requirements relating to the assessment and monitoring of warehousing and storage shelving and racking systems

You need to know and understand:
- the requirements for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when assessing and monitoring warehousing and storage shelving and racking systems
