Overview

This standard is about providing operational communications advice to Operational and/or Tactical Commanders at pre-planned events and spontaneous incidents. It includes maintaining effective ongoing communications and use of emergency services operational communication platforms to identify appropriate tactics and to ensure safety at incidents.


 
This standard is recommended for those who advise on operational communications during incidents. 


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. confirm your role and responsibilities for operational communications with relevant others in your organisation and multi agency partners
2. use the agreed joint decision model to inform decisions 
3. gather information and intelligence from relevant sources that meets organisational communications knowledge requirements 
4. share available risk assessment plans with multi agency partners to contribute to a joint understanding of risk
5. provide specialist advice proactively and reactively during incidents in line with operational communications requirements
6. engage with internal and external partners to establish the options available to manage incidents in line with operational communications requirements
7. engage with internal and external partners to formulate effective operational communications plans using available information 
8. share operational communications plans with multi agency partners in line with agreed policies and procedures
9. monitor and review operational communications plans on a continuous basis 
10. communicate changes to the operational communications plan to others in line with organisational communication policies and procedures
11. communicate clearly and in line with agreed protocols, avoiding the use of technical jargon and organisation specific abbreviations
12. record information and advice given, including whether the advice was implemented or not

7. legislation, policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols that apply to your role
