Overview
This standard covers carrying out delegated care activities that are within the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability to assist the registered practitioner in the delivery of perioperative individual care. This will involve assessment, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of perioperative individual care.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- access and accurately interpret all relevant work instructions and information
- work safely at all times and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
- deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved
- identify and minimise hazards and risk in the workplace
communicate with the individual and key people at a pace, in a manner and at a level appropriate to the individual's understanding, preferences and needs
respect the individual's rights and wishes relating to their consent, privacy, beliefs, and dignity
- collect sufficient valid and reliable information to assist the registered practitioner to assess the care needs of the individual
- feedback information you have collected to the registered practitioner at the agreed time
- agree delegated aspects of the perioperative care plan with the registered practitioner which are within your current competence
- use the perioperative care plan to identify the timing/frequency of your activities to meet the identified care needs of the individual
- provide care to the individual in accordance with organisational procedures
- monitor the effects of your activities and promptly identify, and report changes in the individual's wellbeing/status to the relevant member of the care team
- assist in the review of the perioperative care plan
- complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
- the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
- how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions and information
- specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
- the duty to report any acts or omissions that could be unsafe/detrimental to you or others
- the hazards and risks which may arise during the execution of your work role and how you can minimise these
- how to adapt communication styles in ways which are appropriate to the needs of the individual
- the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others
- evidence-based practice and its role in improving care
- the principles, practice and procedures associated with informed consent
- the needs of individuals and carers including issues relating to dignity, confidentiality, and privacy
- organisational management structures, roles, and responsibilities
- the principles of the care process
- the importance of applying standard precautions and the potential consequences of poor practice
- specific care needs of the individuals that you work with
- how an individual's care needs may change according to the stage of the procedure, including pre-operative; operative; post-operative
- the principles of individual advocacy, and effective ways of representing and safeguarding individuals' interests
- the effect of anxiety on the emotional state and behaviour of individuals and how to recognise signs of distress
- methods of monitoring individuals' ongoing care needs, safety and wellbeing
- methods of providing support and reassurance to individuals who are undergoing clinical procedures
- the care provided to individuals who die during clinical procedures
- sources of information and how to access and use them
- how to collate and assess information from a number of sources to determine individuals' care needs
- methods for checking and confirming the accuracy, validity and reliability of information
- how plans of care may vary for different individuals, scheduled and non-scheduled procedures
- how to identify and access appropriate resources for the delivery of individual care
- sources of information and advice that are available if there are any problems or uncertainty regarding plans of care
- the importance of following agreed plans of care, and of reporting significant deviations from them
- circumstances which may require plans of care to be revised
- the purpose of providing feedback to the registered practitioner to assist in the evaluation of perioperative care plans
- the process for revising perioperative plans of care
- the organisational requirements and reasons for recording care needs
- how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
