Overview

This standard covers carrying out delegated care activities that are within the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability to assist the registered practitioner in the support, care and monitoring of individuals before, during and after clinical procedures within the perioperative care environment.  You will be working under the direction of a registered practitioner. This standard does not include you taking measurements of physiological parameters.  


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. access and accurately interpret all relevant work instructions and information
  2. work safely at all times and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
  3. deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved
  4. identify and minimise hazards and risk in the workplace
  5. communicate with the individual and key people at a pace, in a manner and at a level appropriate to the individual's understanding, preferences and needs
  6. respect the individual's rights and wishes relating to their consent, privacy, beliefs, and dignity
  7. provide support to the individual and ensure health and safety measures are implemented at all times
  8. provide support and care to the individual in accordance with organisational procedures
  9. effectively monitor the individual's needs and wellbeing at all times, paying close attention to any areas of particular concern, as highlighted in the plan of care
  10. encourage the individual to express feelings of discomfort, pain or distress
  11. minimise factors which may cause undue stress or distress to the individual within the constraints of the setting and the procedure
  12. pass relevant information on the individual's needs and care to other members of the care team who will be involved with them
  13. complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
  2. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
  3. how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions and information
  4. specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
  5. the duty to report any acts or omissions that could be unsafe/detrimental to you or others
  6. the hazards and risks which may arise during the execution of your work role and how you can minimise these
  7. how to adapt communication styles in ways which are appropriate to the needs of the individual  
  8. the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others
  9. evidence-based practice and its role in improving care
  10. the principles, practice and procedures associated with informed consent
  11. the needs of individuals including issues relating to dignity, confidentiality, and privacy
  12. organisational management structures, roles, and responsibilities
  13. the procedures and methods relating to the coordination of inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary teams within and across services
  14. the importance of applying standard precautions and the potential consequences of poor practice
  15. the importance of checking individual perioperative care plans prior to commencing support and monitoring activities
  16. the importance of both verbal and non-verbal support to individuals undergoing clinical procedures in the perioperative environment
  17. the ways in which individual rights and choice may have to be restricted because of the nature of the perioperative environment and procedures
  18. the effect which individuals' personal beliefs and preferences may have on their behaviour and attitude in relation to the perioperative environment settings
  19. the effects of pre-medication and sedation on individuals, and the difference re-medication makes to the support, care and monitoring activities required
  20. how perioperative settings and procedures may cause stress and distress to individuals and how environmental factors which cause stress and distress can be reduced
  21. the signs of individual distress and how to support individuals who are, or who may become, distressed
  22. the importance of close observation of individuals, and of reporting any concerns without delay
  23. how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
