Overview

This standard covers the safe practice of fitting, evaluating and modifying dental prosthetic devices in order to improve the occlusion, aesthetics or function. The range of devices may include removable restorations (complete and partial dentures) fixed restorations (crowns and bridges) and gum shields. This could be a trial fitting or a fitting of a completed or finished device. Users of this standard will need to ensure that practice reflects up to date information and policies.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1.     access and accurately interpret all relevant work instructions and information
2.     work safely at all times and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
3.     deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved
4.     identify and minimise hazards and risk in the workplace
5.     confirm identity of the individual in accordance with organisational procedures
6.     gain valid, informed consent from the individual in accordance with specific procedures
7.     communicate with relevant others at a pace, manner and level appropriate to their understanding, preferences and needs
8.     respect the individual's rights and wishes relating to their privacy, beliefs, and dignity
9.     provide support to the individual and ensure health and safety measures are implemented at all times
10.  identify pre-disposing clinical conditions that could affect the fitting of the prosthesis, taking account of the individual's safety, emotional state and comfort
11.  discuss the planned procedures with the individual in a way that will reduce any anxiety and provide reassurance
12.  apply standard precautions for infection prevention and control
13.  prepare the equipment and materials that you need, according to the manufacturer's instructions
14.  ensure the individual is seated comfortably and appropriately positioned for the procedure
15.  examine and evaluate the prosthesis inside and outside the mouth for:

  • retention and stability
  • occlusal relations
  • comfort for the individual
  • aesthetic appearance
  • effect on phonetics
  • match to the pre-centric check record
    16.  involve the individual in the evaluation to ensure that the prosthesis meets their needs
    17.  adjust the prosthesis where necessary and repeat the try-in and evaluations until you and the individual are satisfied
    18.  explain the next stage of the process to the individual and check that they have understood
    19.  where appropriate, explain and discuss oral hygiene and maintenance procedures with the individual, and advise on any follow-up treatment
    20.  dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
    21.  complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements"

2. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role

4. specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
5. the duty to report any acts or omissions that could be unsafe/detrimental to you or others
6. the hazards and risks which may arise during the execution of your work role and how you can minimise these
7. how to communicate with relevant others at a pace, manner and level appropriate to their understanding, preferences and needs
8. the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others
9. how to obtain positive confirmation of an individual's identity in accordance with organisational procedures
10. the principles, practice and procedures associated with informed consent
11. the importance of applying standard infection control precautions to impression-taking, and the potential consequences of poor practice
12. relevant oral anatomy and physiology related to oral cavity, articulation and occlusion
13. clinical practice and procedures related to modification of fixed prosthodontic, and/or removable prosthodontic custom-made dental appliances, and the range of modifications that can be carried out
14. how to manage and integrate the procedure of trial appliance modification to assist in providing aesthetic, functional and /or phonetic dental prostheses in accordance with individual requirements or needs
15. the developments in occlusal dynamics as appropriate to custom-made dental devices
16. how to dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
17. how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements"
