Overview
"This standard covers the safe practice of taking direct shades of individuals’ tissues specifically teeth and soft tissues to produce information related to the provision of dental prosthetic devices or similar using manual or digital techniques.
Tooth and soft tissue shades may be required for fixed crowns and bridges, complete dentures, partial dentures, or additions to existing dentures. Users of this standard will need to ensure that practice reflects up to date information and policies."
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
"1. access and accurately interpret all relevant work instructions and information
2. work safely at all times and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
3. deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved
4. identify and minimise hazards and risk in the workplace
5. confirm identity of the individual in accordance with organisational procedures
6. gain valid, informed consent from the individual in accordance with specific procedures
7. communicate with relevant others at a pace, manner and level appropriate to their understanding, preferences and needs
8. respect the individual's rights and wishes relating to their privacy, beliefs, and dignity
9. provide support to the individual and ensure health and safety measures are implemented at all times
10. identify any pre-disposing clinical conditions that could affect the use of shade-taking systems, taking account of the individual's safety, emotional state and comfort
11. decide on a suitable and safe technique related to the type of shade-taking system, and whether the individual is edentulous, partially edentulous or dentate
12. use digital techniques for shade taking to produce a match for dental prosthetic devices
13. apply standard precautions for infection prevention and control
14. consider the accuracy of the light (natural or artificial) for the procedure, taking into account the surrounding environment, and take the appropriate action
15. establish, through discussion, and record the needs and requirements of the individual
16. prepare the individual, the equipment needed, and any support materials, and advise the individual on how to participate during the procedure
17. place the shade tab against the main area, select the appropriate match and accurately record the result, or record the main body of the tooth
18. place the shade tab against other areas of the tissue or tooth, select the appropriate match and accurately record the result, or digitally record the shades of the other areas
19. where appropriate, select a surface texture via an appropriate comparison, and select a surface value character to match agreed case needs
20. discuss and agree the findings with the individual, and explain the follow-up treatment procedures
21. dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
22. complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements"

15. the effects of lighting types and lighting values on shade taking, and of exterior conditions including colours in the environment
16. the developments in information and communications technology (ICT), including imaging equipment, in respect of recording aspects shade, texture and gloss
17. the principles, practice and procedures associated with digital techniques for shade taking
18. how to manage and integrate the procedure of shade, surface character and gloss to assist in providing aesthetic dental prostheses (fixed and removable) in accordance with individual requirements or needs
19. how to dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
20. how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements"
