Overview
This standard is about moving and transporting individuals within healthcare work areas. You will need to be able to identify the individual to be moved and make sure the necessary resources are available to move the individual. You will also need to move the individual safely and securely and maintain their privacy and dignity during the move.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- access and accurately interpret all relevant work instructions and information
- work safely at all times and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
- deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved
- identify and minimise hazards and risk in the workplace
- communicate with the individual and key people at a pace, in a manner and at a level appropriate to the individual's understanding, preferences and needs
- respect the individual's rights and wishes relating to their privacy, beliefs, and dignity
- confirm identity of the individual in accordance with organisational procedures
- check all details before commencing the move
- clearly explain to the individual who you are and where you are taking them
- ensure you have any necessary accompanying documentation
- check that the transportation equipment is safe and functioning correctly
- use the transportation equipment safely and in accordance with organisational procedures
- co-operate with other members of staff involved to achieve the best possible outcome for the individual
- care for the individual during transportation in accordance with the individual's needs taking into account the nature of the illness or injury
- use the most suitable route for the individual
- hand over the individual and any necessary documentation to the appropriate member of staff
- assist with any further movement of the individual
- communicate the completion of the move to the relevant person
- return transportation equipment to the correct location
- complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
- the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
- how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions and information
- specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
- the duty to report any acts or omissions that could be unsafe/detrimental to you or others
- the hazards and risks which may arise during the execution of your work role and how you can minimise these
- how to adapt communication styles in ways which are appropriate to the needs of the individual
- the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others
- the needs of individuals including issues relating to dignity, confidentiality, and privacy
- how to obtain positive confirmation of an individual's identity in accordance with organisational procedures
- procedures for identifying, moving and handing over individuals
- how to make individuals feel at ease
- how to move and transport individuals correctly taking into account the nature of the illness or injury
- the safe techniques for moving and handling individuals
- the circumstances under which an individual escort is needed
- the geography of the work area
- the types of records and documentation that must accompany the individual in your organisation
- the types of transportation equipment available
- how to use transportation equipment correctly
- the types of medical equipment which may require movement with the individual
- how to handle medical equipment safely
- how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
