Overview

This standard is about moving and transporting individuals within healthcare work areas.  You will need to be able to identify the individual to be moved and make sure the necessary resources are available to move the individual.  You will also need to move the individual safely and securely and maintain their privacy and dignity during the move.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. access and accurately interpret all relevant work instructions and information
  2. work safely at all times and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
  3. deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved
  4. identify and minimise hazards and risk in the workplace
  5. communicate with the individual and key people at a pace, in a manner and at a level appropriate to the individual's understanding, preferences and needs
  6. respect the individual's rights and wishes relating to their privacy, beliefs, and dignity
  7. confirm identity of the individual in accordance with organisational procedures
  8. check all details before commencing the move
  9. clearly explain to the individual who you are and where you are taking them
  10. ensure you have any necessary accompanying documentation
  11. check that the transportation equipment is safe and functioning correctly
  12. use the transportation equipment safely and in accordance with organisational procedures
  13. co-operate with other members of staff involved to achieve the best possible outcome for the individual
  14. care for the individual during transportation in accordance with the individual's needs taking into account the nature of the illness or injury
  15. use the most suitable route for the individual
  16. hand over the individual and any necessary documentation to the appropriate member of staff
  17. assist with any further movement of the individual
  18. communicate the completion of the move to the relevant person
  19. return transportation equipment to the correct location
  20. complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
  2. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
  3. how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions and information
  4. specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
  5. the duty to report any acts or omissions that could be unsafe/detrimental to you or others
  6. the hazards and risks which may arise during the execution of your work role and how you can minimise these
  7. how to adapt communication styles in ways which are appropriate to the needs of the individual  
  8. the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others
  9. the needs of individuals including issues relating to dignity, confidentiality, and privacy
  10. how to obtain positive confirmation of an individual's identity in accordance with organisational procedures
  11. procedures for identifying, moving and handing over individuals
  12. how to make individuals feel at ease
  13. how to move and transport individuals correctly taking into account the nature of the illness or injury
  14. the safe techniques for moving and handling individuals
  15. the circumstances under which an individual escort is needed
  16. the geography of the work area
  17. the types of records and documentation that must accompany the individual in your organisation
  18. the types of transportation equipment available
  19. how to use transportation equipment correctly
  20. the types of medical equipment which may require movement with the individual
  21. how to handle medical equipment safely
  22. how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
