Overview

 This standard relates to the performance of routine preventative and/or first line corrective maintenance activities by the user for equipment within your own working context. It ensures that clinical equipment in use remains safe and fit for its intended purpose. You can use the standard for each type of equipment within the scope of your normal work activity. 


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. access and accurately interpret all relevant work instructions and information
  2. work safely at all times and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
  3. deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved
  4. identify and minimise hazards and risk in the workplace
  5. prioritise action based on maintaining services
  6. notify all issues affecting the required preventive and/or first line corrective maintenance and their impact on delivery of services to relevant others
  7. access relevant data from technical or supporting manuals to assist with routine maintenance
  8. assess decontamination status and requirements of the equipment to be maintained
  9. carry out suitable disinfection/cleaning procedures prior to maintenance in accordance with organisational procedures
  10. confirm equipment is safely set up in accordance with organisational procedures
  11. carry out maintenance activities in accordance with schedule and organisational requirements
  12. report any instances where the maintenance activities cannot be fully met or where there are identified defects outside the planned schedule
  13. check equipment is functioning against expected operational parameters to confirm operational status
  14. dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
  15. complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
  2. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
  3. how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions and information
  4. specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
  5. the duty to report any acts or omissions that could be unsafe/detrimental to you or others
  6. the hazards and risks which may arise during the execution of your work role and how you can minimise these
  7. the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others
  8. manufacturers specifications and instructions
  9. how to communicate effectively with relevant others
  10. the requirements for routine preventative and/or first line corrective maintenance for specified equipment, including frequency
  11. the peripherals required for the optimum functioning of the equipment
  12. the infection control requirements and decontamination procedures as they apply to equipment and environments
  13. the expected performance parameters, principles of operation, capabilities and limitations of specified equipment
  14. the technology used in the equipment being maintained
  15. the safety implications and correct procedures for handling the technology used
  16. the factors affecting decisions on maintenance activity including urgency, time, impact on services, other available equipment, risks
  17. the type and range of records required for maintenance of equipment
  18. fault and error message diagnosis and appropriate actions
  19. how to dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
  20. how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
