Overview
This standard covers the safe storage and transport of medical gas cylinders.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- access and accurately interpret all relevant work instructions and information
- work safely at all times and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
- deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved
- identify and minimise hazards and risk in the workplace
check that medical gas cylinders are stored safely and that they are:
- not subject to extremes of temperature
- in dry, clean and well-ventilated areas
- away from highly flammable liquids and other combustible materials
- away from sources of heat and ignition
ensure cylinders that are filled, empty or of different gases are all stored according to organisational instructions
- use correct handling techniques, securing devices and equipment when lifting, moving and transporting cylinders
- transport cylinders in accordance with organisational procedures
- make sure cylinders do not come into contact with oils which may react with the gas contained within them
- check stock levels and report low numbers to an appropriate person
- take precautions to protect cylinders from theft
check labels and make sure that:
- the label is intact
- the cylinder you are transporting is the one requested
check the cylinder for leaks and report any damage
- dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
- complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements

- the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
- the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
- how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions and information
- specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
- the duty to report any acts or omissions that could be unsafe/detrimental to you or others
- the hazards and risks which may arise during the execution of your work role and how you can minimise these
- the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others
- how to dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
- the correct manual handling techniques for moving and transporting cylinders
- how to store medical gas cylinders safely and why this is important
- the colour coding and symbols on medical gas cylinders
- the importance of maintaining records of medical gas supplies
- the potential danger with high pressure gas cylinders of explosion if in contact with oil, grease and creams when handling cylinders
- low stock levels for each type of gas required by the organisation
- the organisational procedure for reporting any leaking equipment
- how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
