Overview
This standard covers the management of the immediate environment and resources used during healthcare activities that either you perform yourself or are led by a registered practitioner. You will be responsible for managing the environment and resources so that they are kept in an effective state while the procedure is taking place and reinstating the resources after the event.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- access and accurately interpret all relevant work instructions and information
- work safely at all times and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
- deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved
- identify and minimise hazards and risk in the workplace
- respect the individual's rights and wishes relating to their privacy, beliefs, and dignity
- operate equipment safely in accordance with manufacturers' instructions and organisational procedures
- handle all resources in a safe manner, consistent with infection control techniques and other organisational requirements appropriate to the procedure and setting
- regularly monitor environmental conditions and maintain them at the correct levels to ensure individual comfort and as required by the procedure
- monitor the operation of equipment regularly and confirm it is in good working order
- monitor consumable materials used in the activity correctly and safely, and replenish and replace in accordance with protocols
- clean fixed items effectively after use with the appropriate materials
- return un-opened unused and surplus resources to the correct location for storage
- clean re-useable items effectively after use and make them safe prior to storage
- dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
- complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
- the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
- how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions and information
- specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
- the duty to report any acts or omissions that could be unsafe/detrimental to you or others
- the hazards and risks which may arise during the execution of your work role and how you can minimise these
- how to adapt communication styles in ways which are appropriate to the needs of the individual
- the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others
- organisational management structures, roles, and responsibilities
- why it is necessary for actions to be taken relating to the control of infection
- possible sources of infection and how to control it take during and after a procedure
- accountability and responsibility for monitoring and managing equipment and other resources
- the operational characteristics of equipment and materials used and how to recognise when these are not of the required quality
- the essential resources required for the activity
- the procedures to be performed and the equipment and materials to be used that relate to these
- the importance of ensuring consumables of the correct quality and quantity are available throughout the activity
- how to confirm that equipment (including electrical) is safe and suitable for use
- methods for safely handling instruments, equipment and materials
- how the correct level of cleanliness may be maintained
- the correct way to store instruments and equipment used in the procedure
- methods used to replenish, maintain and clean equipment and why it is important to regularly replenish and replace supplies
- the optimum frequencies at which monitoring of resources should take place
- the different types of waste and by-products generated by the activity
- how to dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
- how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
