Overview
This standard relates to working with individuals, relevant others and members of a multi-disciplinary team, as appropriate, to fit equipment, device, product and/or system to meet the clinical needs and those of the individual.
Fitting involves handing over and checking the fit of the equipment or device meets the needs of the individual or their circumstances in accordance with the manufacturer's instruction and the prescription. This may take place in a variety of clinical and non-clinical settings. The process may include a trial use of the equipment and/or device in the user environment.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- access and accurately interpret all relevant work instructions and information
- work safely at all times and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
- deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved
- identify and minimise hazards and risk in the workplace
- communicate with the individual and key people at a pace, in a manner and at a level appropriate to the individual's understanding, preferences and needs
- respect the individual's rights and wishes relating to their privacy, beliefs, and dignity
- provide support to the individual and carers and ensure health and safety measures are implemented at all times
- gain valid, informed consent from the individual in accordance with specific procedures
- liaise and work with key stakeholders, individuals or agencies involved in the fitting process for the individual
- apply appropriate health and safety measures, infection prevention and control and personal protective equipment within the fitting process
- confirm the effective operation and safe working order of the equipment, device, product and/or system within expected performance parameters
- fit the equipment or attach the equipment, device, product and/or system and activate where necessary
- check operational safety and performance measurements
- confirm the suitability of fit and size of the equipment, device, product and/or system
- check the comfort and acceptance of the equipment, device, product and/or system and ensure it meets the individuals needs and clinical requirements
- make adjustments in line with manufacturer's guidelines and within the prescribed specification or arrange for the adaptation to be undertaken by the appropriate person
- agree relevant trial period and technical details for individuals using new/adjusted equipment, device, product and/or system
- handover the equipment, device, product and/or system to the individual or relevant others and clearly explain their responsibilities and the mechanisms for detecting and reporting any system failure in line with legislation and organisational requirements
- confirm that individual and/or relevant others have all relevant documentation and inform them of the mechanisms for on-going maintenance management and review
- identify and record when equipment, device, product and/or system no longer required
- dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
- complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
Knowledge and Understanding

- the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
- the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
- how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions and information
- specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
- the duty to report any acts or omissions that could be unsafe/detrimental to you or others
- the hazards and risks which may arise during the execution of your work role and how you can minimise these
- how to adapt communication styles in ways which are appropriate to the needs of the individual
- the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others
- evidence-based practice and its role in improving care
- the principles, practice and procedures associated with informed consent
- the needs of individuals and carers including issues relating to dignity, confidentiality, and privacy
- the procedures and methods relating to the coordination of inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary teams within and across services
- the importance of reflecting on your practice and its relationship with continuing professional development
- how to work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
- how to liaise with key stakeholders and the individual for fitting equipment, medical devices and products relevant to your work practice
- the relevant anatomy, physiology and associated specialist knowledge applicable to the fitting of prescribed equipment, medical device, product and/or associated systems within your area of practice
- the range, underpinning principles and applications of the equipment, medical devices, products and associated systems requiring fitting to the individual within your area of responsibility
- the acceptable range of measurements and limits of use for each type of equipment, device, product and the associated systems to ensure safety and fitness for use prior to fitting
- the importance of fitting equipment, medical devices, products and associated systems with the individual within the appropriate environment and how to evaluate the user environment when applicable, for the fitting process
- how to fit and make minor adjustments to ensure best fit and comfort for the equipment, medical devices, products and associated systems to meet individual needs and the prescription criteria
- the importance of handover procedures and of informing individuals and relevant others of their responsibilities for the equipment, devices, products and associated systems
- how to identify and record when equipment / device no longer required
- the wider clinical implications of changes made in alignment, fit and functionality
- how to dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
- how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
