Overview
This standard relates to working with individuals, relevant others and members of a multi-disciplinary team, where appropriate, to adapt equipment medical devices, and/or products to meet individual needs.
Adaptation involves tailoring the equipment or device to meet the needs of the individual or their circumstances in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. The process may include a trial use of the equipment and/or device in the user environment.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- access and accurately interpret all relevant work instructions and information
- work safely at all times and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
- deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved
- identify and minimise hazards and risk in the workplace
- communicate with the individual and key people at a pace, in a manner and at a level appropriate to the individual's understanding, preferences and needs
- respect the individual's rights and wishes relating to their privacy, beliefs, and dignity
- provide support to the individual and carers and ensure health and safety measures are implemented at all times
- gain valid, informed consent from the individual in accordance with specific procedures
- liaise with key stakeholders, individuals or agencies involved in the adaption process and check authorisation for the adaption
- check the equipment, device, product and/or system conform to the required quality standards, manufacturers guidelines and prescription prior to any authorised adaption
- apply appropriate health and safety measures, infection prevention and control and personal protective equipment within the adaptation process
- identify and record the risks specific to the adaptation
- test and verify the required adaptation in line with the prescribed/authorised recommendations in accordance with approved protocols and procedures
- work with any relevant stakeholders during the adaption process for any additional adaption that is outside your competence and level of responsibility
- confirm the effective operation and safe working order of the equipment, device, product and associated system within expected performance parameters
- check the adaption does not affect any other associated system
- inform the relevant stakeholders and /or the individual that the adapted equipment, device, product and/or system is ready for fitting
- make arrangements to safely and securely store the equipment, item and/or associated systems prior to the fitting stage
- ensure comfort and acceptance of equipment, device, product and/or system and that it meets the needs of the individual
- dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
- complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
- the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
- how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions and information
- specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
- the duty to report any acts or omissions that could be unsafe/detrimental to you or others
- the hazards and risks which may arise during the execution of your work role and how you can minimise these
- how to adapt communication styles in ways which are appropriate to the needs of the individual
- the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others
- the principles, practice and procedures associated with informed consent
- the needs of individuals and carers including issues relating to dignity, confidentiality, and privacy
- how to work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
- liaise and work with the range of stakeholders related to adapting equipment, device, product and/or system
- relevant anatomy, physiology and associated knowledge applicable to the adaption of the prescribed equipment, device, product and/or system
- the procedures and systems within the organisation for the authorisation of any adaption to equipment, device, product and/or system
- the test and verification procedures for each type of equipment, device, product and/or system to ensure any adaption maintains its integrity, safety and is fit for the intended purpose
- the acceptable range of measurements used in the adaption to meet the specification of the original prescription
- how to evaluate the user environment when applicable, to inform the adaption of the equipment, device, product and/or system
- how the adaption may impact on the equipment, device, product and/or system and where to seek advice to address any identified issues/problems
- the wider clinical implications of changes made in alignment, fit and functionality
- how to dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
- how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
