Overview

This standard has broad application and is relevant to all types of types of analysers. The analysers may be in a variety of clinical settings or may be providing Point of Care Testing.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. access and accurately interpret all relevant work instructions and information
  2. work safely at all times and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
  3. deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved
  4. identify and minimise hazards and risk in the workplace
  5. ensure unique identifier is attached to specimen/sample
  6. ensure 'chain of custody' is maintained, where appropriate
  7. ensure the correct method of preparation for the type of specimen/sample and request has been used
  8. inspect and confirm specimen/sample is of suitable quality for testing
  9. implement the tests in accordance with organisational procedures
  10. confirm the equipment to be used is appropriate and has been calibrated as per the test protocols
  11. implement and monitor appropriate quality control methods to ensure accuracy and precision of results
  12. ensure that the specimen/sample testing is performed and fully completed in accordance with organisational requirements
  13. dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
  14. complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
  2. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
  3. how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions and information
  4. specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
  5. the duty to report any acts or omissions that could be unsafe/detrimental to you or others
  6. the hazards and risks which may arise during the execution of your work role and how you can minimise these
  7. the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others
  8. organisational management structures, roles, and responsibilities
  9. the importance of maintaining link between specimens, samples and documentation
  10. the factors that may influence the quality of specimen/sample and their significance
  11. the importance of dealing appropriately with urgent samples
  12. methods of testing for different specimens/samples and circumstances and how and when to apply them
  13. the importance of ensuring that the equipment used is appropriate
  14. calibration methods and protocols for the equipment being used
  15. quality control methods suitable for standard tests
  16. the importance of recognising outlying results and what to do about them
  17. contingency and risk assessments relating to specimen/sample testing
  18. the importance of working effectively and meeting prioritisation needs
  19. how to dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
  20. how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
