Overview
This standard has broad application and is relevant to all types of types of analysers. The analysers may be in a variety of clinical settings or may be providing Point of Care Testing.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- access and accurately interpret all relevant work instructions and information
- work safely at all times and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
- deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved
- identify and minimise hazards and risk in the workplace
- ensure unique identifier is attached to specimen/sample
- ensure 'chain of custody' is maintained, where appropriate
- ensure the correct method of preparation for the type of specimen/sample and request has been used
- inspect and confirm specimen/sample is of suitable quality for testing
- implement the tests in accordance with organisational procedures
- confirm the equipment to be used is appropriate and has been calibrated as per the test protocols
- implement and monitor appropriate quality control methods to ensure accuracy and precision of results
- ensure that the specimen/sample testing is performed and fully completed in accordance with organisational requirements
- dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
- complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
- the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
- how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions and information
- specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
- the duty to report any acts or omissions that could be unsafe/detrimental to you or others
- the hazards and risks which may arise during the execution of your work role and how you can minimise these
- the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others
- organisational management structures, roles, and responsibilities
- the importance of maintaining link between specimens, samples and documentation
- the factors that may influence the quality of specimen/sample and their significance
- the importance of dealing appropriately with urgent samples
- methods of testing for different specimens/samples and circumstances and how and when to apply them
- the importance of ensuring that the equipment used is appropriate
- calibration methods and protocols for the equipment being used
- quality control methods suitable for standard tests
- the importance of recognising outlying results and what to do about them
- contingency and risk assessments relating to specimen/sample testing
- the importance of working effectively and meeting prioritisation needs
- how to dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
- how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
