URN: SEMPW415
Business Sectors (Suites): Rail Engineering
Developed by: NSAR
Approved on: 2024

Overview

This standard is about the supervision of assessment, preparatory and movement activities of permanent way materials, components and equipment. This may include more than one work site and multiple materials, components and equipment.

You will be required to supervise the assessment, preparation and movement of permanent way materials, components and equipment. The moving methods and techniques to be used will involve a detailed consideration of the nature of the load and its final destination as specified by the lifting plan. This may include more than one worksite and multiple materials, components and equipment.

The loads can be robust or fragile.

During this work, you must take account of the relevant worksite operational requirements, procedures and safe working practices as they apply to you.

Your underpinning knowledge will provide a good understanding of your work and will provide an informed approach to applying problem-solving techniques and procedures when supervising this activity.

You will comply with any organisational procedures, and legislative or regulatory health, safety and environmental requirements applicable when supervising this activity.

This standard is for all supervisors carrying out permanent way engineering activities.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1 maintain safe working practices and comply with all relevant health and safety regulations, directives, and guidelines
P2 confirm all necessary documentation is in place prior to movement of the load
P3 confirm the weight of the load to be moved
P4 determine the method and select suitable equipment to move the load
P5 confirm that the equipment to be used is capable of moving the load
P6 determine a suitable route for moving the load, minimising risk to person(s) and property
P7 ensure that the load is secured and protected before moving operations start
P8 supervise the movement of permanent way materials, components and equipment
P9 take appropriate action, without delay, when changes to the planned movement activity occur
P10 inform the appropriate person(s) when changes to the planned movement activity have occurred and there are implications involved
P11 prepare appropriate documentation to update on progress and report completion of activities in line with your organisation's procedures
P12 address problems within your control and report unresolved issues
