Undertake replacement of permanent way assets and components
Overview
This standard is about undertaking the replacement of permanent way assets and components during maintenance activities.
You will be required to replace permanent way assets and components. You will work to a plan taking into account local maintenance instructions and also be able to follow the appropriate diagrams and specifications.
The type of asset to be worked on will be either plain line or switches and crossings equipment and associated fastenings.
The assembly methods and techniques to be used will either be manual or mechanical methods and may include the use of small plant and equipment.
The quality standards and accuracy to be achieved will be approved by your organisation and the manufacturer and must include reinstating to within operational tolerances.
During this work, you must take account of the relevant worksite operational requirements, procedures and safe working practices as they apply to you.
Your underpinning knowledge will provide a good understanding of your work and will provide an informed approach to applying problem-solving techniques and procedures to undertake the replacement of permanent way assets and components.
You will comply with any organisational procedures, and legislative or regulatory health, safety and environmental requirements applicable for undertaking replacement of permanent way assets and components. This standard is for all track operatives carrying out permanent way engineering activities.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1 maintain safe working practices and comply with all relevant health and safety regulations, directives, and guidelines
P2 identify any necessary changes to safety requirements upon site arrival and report to the relevant person(s) without delay
P3 source and follow the appropriate schedules, diagrams and related specifications for the work being carried out as approved by your organisation
P4 obtain all the required components and ensure that they are in a suitable condition for replacement and fit for purpose
P5 ensure that any replacement components used meet the required specification
P6 take all necessary precautions to prevent damage to components, tools and equipment during replacement
P7 replace the components in the correct sequence using appropriate tools and techniques
P8 make any necessary settings or adjustments to the components to ensure they will function correctly
P9 ensure that interference with other systems is minimised, and equipment and systems other than those being replaced are not disturbed without authority
P10 take responsibility for the care and use of the resources within the limits of your own authority
P11 prepare appropriate documentation to update on progress and report completion of activities in line with your organisation's procedures
P12 address problems within your control and report unresolved issues
