Overview
This standard identifies the competences you need to apply transfers, decals and livery to components or assemblies, in accordance with approved procedures. You will be expected to use specified/appropriate processes to assess the component and to pre-treat the substrate and this will include such things as cleaning, degreasing, masking, filling, flattening down, pre-heating and other appropriate treatments. You will be expected to position, align and secure the decals and transfers in the correct locations, using the specified/appropriate techniques. Decals and transfers will include self adhesive, spray-through stencils, stencils used to mark out, mask and then spray, standard single colour livery, and multi-colour livery. Your responsibilities will require you to comply with organisational policy and procedures for the application of decals, transfers and livery and to report any problems with these activities, or with the materials and equipment used, that you cannot personally resolve, or are outside your permitted authority, to the relevant people. You will be expected to work with a minimum of supervision, taking personal responsibility for your own actions and for the quality and accuracy of the work that you carry out. Your underpinning knowledge will be sufficient to provide a sound understanding of your work and will provide an informed approach to the techniques and procedures used to apply transfers, decals and livery. You will understand the decals and transfers being used and their application, and will know about the base materials, transfers, decals, coating materials and their preparation requirements, in adequate depth to provide a sound basis for carrying out the activities, correcting faults and ensuring that finished components are to the required standards and to the customer's expectations. You will understand the safety precautions required when carrying out the finishing operations. You will be required to demonstrate safe working practices throughout. You will also understand your responsibilities for safety and the importance of taking the necessary safeguards to protect yourself and others in the workplace and towards the environment. |
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
1. work safely at all times, complying with health and safety legislation, regulations, directives and other relevant guidelines 2. follow work instructions and specifications for application of transfers, decals and livery 3. ensure the material surfaces to be finished are prepared for the finishing operations 4. check that any required equipment and treatment solutions are set up and maintained at satisfactory operating conditions and levels 5. carry out the application process following operating procedures and to meet the specification requirements 6. ensure that the finished workpiece achieves the required characteristics and meets the specification 7. deal promptly and effectively with problems within your control and report those that cannot be solved 8. ensure that work records are completed, stored securely and available to others, as per organisational requirements 9. leave the work area in a safe condition on completion of the activities, as per organisational and legal requirements |
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
1. the specific safety precautions to be taken whilst carrying out the activities (including any specific legislation, regulations or codes of practice relating to the activities, equipment or materials) 2. the health and safety requirements of the work area and the activities, and the responsibility these requirements place on you 3. the hazards associated with the activities, and how to minimise them and reduce risks 4. the personal protective equipment and clothing (PPE) to be worn during the activities 5. the importance of keeping the work area clean and tidy, including the use of 5S or similar techniques 6. how to obtain and interpret the production documentation required during the application activity 7. the different surface treatments available and their applications (such as degreasers, solvents and soap washes, colours, epoxy, acrylic and urethane lacquers) 8. the preparation methods and techniques for mixing paints or varnishes 9. how to mark out the components for positioning of the transfers, decals or livery 10. the methods used to apply transfers, decals and livery 11. the different methods used to cure transfers, decals and livery (such as infra-red, ultra-violet, thermal, air drying) 12. how to identify application defects (such as misalignment, distortion, bubbles, contamination and other surface defects) 13. how to remove poorly applied transfers, decals or livery without damaging the substrate 14. the checks to be carried out to ensure that the application meets the required specification 15. the procedure for the safe disposal of waste materials 16. the importance of completing the production documentation throughout the application process 17. the extent of your own responsibility and whom you should report to if you have any problems that you cannot resolve 18. how to access, use and maintain information to comply with organisational requirements and legislation |
