Repairing rigid inflatable boat (RIB) sponsons
Overview
This standard identifies the competences you need to repair rigid inflatable boat (RIB) sponsons, in accordance with approved procedures. The types of repair could include, non structural patch repair, internal patch repair, structural, sectional and or replacing broken or worn components on a range of surfaces such as flat, vertical, curved, irregular and cornered.
You will be expected to identify the method of repair to be used and select suitable repair materials. The methods and techniques used to repair assemblies could include degreasing, abrading, bonding and replacing worn or damaged components
Your responsibilities will require you to comply with organisational policy and procedures for the repair activities undertaken, and to report any problems with the repair activities, equipment or materials that you cannot personally resolve, or are outside your permitted authority, to the relevant people. You will be expected to work with a minimum of supervision, taking personal responsibility for your own actions and for the quality and accuracy of the work that you produce.
Your underpinning knowledge will provide a good understanding of your work and will provide an informed approach to applying repair procedures. You will understand the repair techniques used, and their application, in adequate depth to provide a sound basis for carrying out the activities to the required specification.
You will understand the safety precautions required when carrying out the repair activities and when using the associated tools and equipment. You will be required to demonstrate safe working practices throughout, and will understand the responsibility you owe to yourself and others in the workplace.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations, directives and guidelines
- confirm the type and method of repair to be used
- follow the relevant specifications for the sponsons to be repaired
- complete any required preparation procedures before undertaking the repair
- carry out the repairs within agreed timescale using approved materials, components and methods and procedures
- ensure that the repaired sponson meets the specified operating conditions
- deal promptly and effectively with problems within your control and report those that cannot be solved
- complete relevant documentation in line with
organisational procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the specific safety precautions to be taken when working in a marine manufacturing environment such as general workshop and site safety, appropriate personal protective equipment, accident procedure; statutory regulations, risk assessment procedures and relevant requirements of HASAWA, COSHH, DSEAR and Work Equipment Regulations)
- the storage, ventilation and extraction requirements for the use of flammable adhesives, sealants and bonding agents
- how to prevent fire and/or explosion, from sparks, static electricity or naked flame
the personal protective clothing and equipment (PPE) to be worn when carrying out the repair activities
the correct methods of moving or lifting materials
- the hazards associated with repair activities (such as handling materials/components; using dangerous or badly maintained tools and equipment), and how they can be minimised
- how to obtain the necessary drawings, specifications and job instructions
- how to extract information from drawings and related specifications (to include symbols and conventions to appropriate BS or ISO standards) in relation to work undertaken
- how to carry out currency/issue checks of the specifications you are working with
- how to assess the extent of the damage and how this affects the method and type of repair to be selected
- principles and techniques used for undertaking repairs to sponsons
- the preparations to be carried out on the materials prior to undertaking the repair activity
- the effective use and care of tools, equipment and materials used in the repair activity
- why it is important to only use approved methods of repair and materials and the potential consequences of not following the approved procedures
- the problems that can occur when undertaking repair activities and how these can be avoided
- the checks to be completed on the repair to ensure component quality has been maintained such as accuracy, position, security, function and completeness
- the procedures to be used for the safe disposal of waste materials
- the extent of your own responsibility and whom you should report to if you have problems that you cannot resolve
