Cutting and forming materials to produce hovercraft skirts
Overview
This standard identifies the competences you need to cut and shape materials in order to produce hovercraft skirts, in accordance with approved procedures. You will be required to select the appropriate equipment to use, based on the type of skirt and the material used, and the accuracy to be achieved. This will require you to use a range of cutting tools and equipment, as applicable to the operation being performed and the material being used. The cutting and shaping will involve producing skirting components such as standard open segments, corner open segment, standard closed segment, cornered closed segment, skirt loop, rear flap, bow corner inner loop and anti spray skirt.
Your responsibilities will require you to comply with organisational policy and procedures for the activities undertaken, and to report any problems with the cutting and forming activities, equipment and/or materials that you cannot personally resolve, or are outside your permitted authority, to the relevant person. You will be expected to work with a minimum of supervision, taking personal responsibility for your own actions and for the quality and accuracy of the work that you carry out.
Your underpinning knowledge will provide a good understanding of your work, and will provide an informed approach to applying material cutting and forming procedures on hovercraft skirting components. You will understand the cutting equipment, the processes and their application, and will know about the materials in adequate depth to provide a sound basis for carrying out the activities to the required specification.
You will understand the safety precautions required when working with the fabrication tools and machinery. You will be required to demonstrate safe working practices throughout, and will understand the responsibility you owe to yourself and others in the workplace.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations, directives and guidelines
follow relevant specifications for the component to be produced
- obtain the appropriate tools and equipment for the shaping and forming operations and check they are in a safe, tested and usable condition
- shape and form the materials using appropriate methods and techniques
- check that all the required shaping and forming operations have been completed to the required specification
- deal promptly and effectively with problems within your control and report those that cannot be solved
- complete relevant documentation in line with
organisational procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the specific safety precautions to be taken when working with cutting and forming equipment and materials in a marine manufacturing environment (including general workshop and site safety, appropriate personal protective equipment, accident procedure; statutory regulations, risk assessment procedures and COSHH regulations, safe disposal of waste materials)
the personal protective clothing and equipment (PPE) to be worn when carrying out the cutting and shaping activities
the correct methods of moving, lifting and handling materials
- safe working practices and procedures to be observed when using manual and power operated tools
- the hazards associated with marine manufacturing activities (such as using dangerous or badly maintained tools and equipment, operating guillotines, and when using hand and bench shears) and how they can be minimised
- the procedures for obtaining the necessary drawings and specifications, and how to check that they are the latest issue
- how to extract information from engineering drawings and related specifications (to include symbols and conventions to appropriate BS or ISO standards) in relation to work undertaken
- how to carry out currency/issue checks of the specifications you are working with
- how to interpret the marking out conventions on the materials to be cut and shaped (such as cutting lines, centre lines, positional information)
- the tools and techniques available for cutting and shaping materials
- what preparations you may have to carry out on the material prior to cutting it
- the material characteristics and process considerations to be taken into account when cutting and shaping
- the use and care of tools and equipment, including checks that must be made to ensure that the tools are fit for purpose (such as sharp, undamaged, plugs and cables secure and free from damage, machine guards or safety devices operating correctly)
- the methods to set and adjust tools and equipment
- the importance of using tools or equipment only for the purpose intended; the care that is required when using the tools or equipment; the proper way of preserving tools or equipment between operations
- the problems that can occur with cutting and shaping materials and how these can be avoided
- the checking and inspection techniques that can be applied to check that shape and dimensional accuracy are to specification and within acceptable limits
- the procedures to be used for the safe disposal of waste materials
- the extent of your own responsibility and whom you should report to if you have problems that you cannot resolve
