Overview

This standard identifies the competences you need to fit seating, interior panels, soft furnishings and trim in yachts or boats, in accordance with approved procedures. You will be required to use the appropriate tools and equipment, based on the operations to be performed and components to be fitted. The items to be fitted will include items such as cabin seating, wheel house seats, deck seating, deckhead panels, bulkhead panels, dado panels, trim, carpets, vinyl floors, blinds, curtains, decorative panels and seat covers. The fitting activities will include making all necessary checks and adjustments to ensure that the seating, panels, soft furnishings and trim are correctly positioned, aligned and secured, their cosmetic appearance is acceptable and that they function as per the specification.

Your responsibilities will require you to comply with organisational policy and procedures for the fitting of the seating, panels and soft furnishing and to report any problems with the fitting activities, materials or equipment used, that you cannot personally resolve, or are outside your permitted authority, to the relevant people.  You will be expected to work with either a high level of supervision or as a member of a team. You will take personal responsibility for your own actions and for the quality and accuracy of the work that you carry out. Where team working is involved you must demonstrate a significant personal contribution during the team activities in order to satisfy the requirements of the standard and competency in all the areas required by the standard must be demonstrated.

Your underpinning knowledge will be sufficient to provide a sound basis for your work and will provide an informed approach to applying appropriate fitting techniques and procedures for seating, interior panels, soft furnishings and trim in yachts or boats. You will have an understanding of the seating and furnishings being fitted and will know about the relevant fastening and securing devices, in adequate depth to provide a sound basis for carrying out the activities to the required specification.

You will understand the safety precautions required when carrying out the fitting of the seating and furnishings. You will be required to demonstrate safe working practices throughout and will understand the responsibility you owe to yourself and others in the workplace, both ashore and afloat.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. work safely at all times, complying with health and safety legislation, regulations, directives and other relevant guidelines
  2. follow all relevant drawings and specifications for the installation being carried out
  3. use the correct tools and equipment for the fitting operations and check that they are in a safe and usable condition
  4. fit, position and secure the equipment and components in accordance with the specification
  5. ensure that all necessary connections to the equipment are complete
  6. deal promptly and effectively with problems within your control and report those that cannot be solved
  7. check that the installation is complete and that all components are free from damage
  8. complete relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the specific safety practices and procedures that you need to observe when fitting seating, interior panels, soft furnishing and trim in yachts or boats (including any specific legislation, regulations/codes of practice for the activities, equipment or materials)
  2. the hazards associated with fitting seating, interior panels, soft furnishing and trim and with the tools and equipment used and how they can be minimised
  3. how to recognise and deal with emergencies and the procedures to be followed (such as methods of safely evacuating and closing down compartments in the case of fire or other major incident)
  4. the protective equipment that you need to use for both personal protection (PPE) and protection of the equipment, vessel or craft
  5. how to obtain the necessary job instructions required for the work being carried out
  6. the terminology used for the seating and furnishings to be fitted
  7. how to recognise the seating, panels, furnishings and trim components to be fitted and how to interpret the labelling
  8. the various fasteners that will be used and their method of installation (including threaded fasteners and special securing devices)
  9. the importance of using the specified fasteners for the particular installation and why you must not substitute others
  10. the methods and techniques used for joining different types of soft furnishings
  11. the quality control procedures to be followed during the installation operations
  12. procedures for ensuring that you have the correct tools, equipment, components and fasteners for the activities
  13. the techniques used to position, align, adjust and secure the seating, interior panels, trim and soft furnishings to the craft/vessel without damage
  14. methods of lifting, handling and supporting the seats or interior panels during the fitting activities
  15. the use of seals, sealant and adhesives and the precautions that need to be taken
  16. the checks that need to be carried out to ensure the system integrity, functionality, accuracy and quality of the fitted items
  17. how to recognise fitting defects (such as cosmetic appearance, poor fitting, misalignment, ineffective fasteners, damage or contamination)
  18. the tools and equipment used in the installation activities and their care and control procedures
  19. why tool/equipment control is critical and what to do if a tool or piece of equipment is unaccounted for on completion of the activities
  20. the problems that can occur with the fitting operations and how these can be overcome 
  21. what recording documentation needs to be completed for the activities undertaken
  22. the procedure for the safe disposal of waste materials
  23. the extent of your own responsibility and whom you should report to if you have problems that you cannot resolve

Scope/range


Scope Performance

  1. Carry out all of the following during the fitting of the yacht or boat seating, interior panels and trim:

    1. ensure you have the necessary information to carry out the fitting of the seating and furnishings (such as job instructions)
    2. adhere to procedures or systems in place for risk assessment, COSHH, personal protective equipment and other relevant safety regulations
    3. maintain safe access and working arrangements for the work area
    4. carry out the fitting activities using appropriate techniques and procedures
    5. produce installations which comply with the specification
    6. return all tools, and equipment to the correct location on completion of the activities
    7. leave the work area in a safe and tidy condition
  2. Fit three of the following yacht or boat items of equipment:

    1. seating (such as cabin, deck, wheel house) 
    2. carpets vinyl floors
    3. panels (such as deckhead, dado, bulkhead, decorative)
    4. blinds/curtains
    5. bunks or beds                      
    6. seat covers
    7. hard trim                                 
    8. other specific interior trim
  3. Apply three of the following fitting methods and techniques:

    1. positioning                             
    2. setting and adjusting
    3. aligning                                   
    4. securing
    5. carrying out functional checks
  4. Use four of the following types of fixing techniques:

    1. threaded fasteners
    2. screws                            
    3. adhesives (such as tapes, heat gun, spray)
    4. torque load bolts           
    5. quick-release fasteners    
    6. carpet fixings (such as gripers, trim, adhesive)
    7. locking devices                
    8. hook and loop fastners                                       
    9. cavity fixing devices
  5. Carry out all of the following quality and accuracy checks during the fitting activities:

    1. cosmetic appearance          
    2. accuracy of installation/furnishing lines 
    3. freedom from damage
  6. Fit seating, interior panels and soft furnishing/trim in yachts or boats in compliance with one of the following:

    1. BS, EN or ISO standards and procedures
    2. customer (contractual) standards and requirements
    3. company standards and procedures
    4. recognised compliance agency/body's standards (such as Lloyds, Boat Safety Scheme, BMEA Code)
    5. other accepted international standards
  7. Complete the relevant paperwork, to include one from the following and pass to the appropriate people:

    1. build records                                                      
    2. job cards
    3. quality/acceptance documentation                   
    4. work authorisation documents
    5. craft/vessel log
    6. other specific reporting method
