Evaluate the results of engineering research
Overview
This standard identifies the competences you need to evaluate research results, in accordance with approved procedures. You will be required to plan the most appropriate way to carry out the evaluation, to establish the criteria against which the evaluation will take place, and to assess the research results against these criteria. You will also be required to present your results and recommendations to the relevant people, in the appropriate format.
Your responsibilities will require you to comply with organisational policy and procedures for ensuring the successful evaluation of research, and to report any problems that you cannot personally resolve to the relevant authority. You will be expected to work unsupervised, either on your own or as part of a team, which you may lead or direct, taking full responsibility for your actions and, possibly, for the work of colleagues or subordinates.
Your underpinning knowledge will provide a good understanding of general and discipline-specific engineering principles and processes, and you will be fully conversant with organisational procedures and systems. You will understand data analysis and evaluation methods, patent, copyright and intellectual property issues, in sufficient depth to enable you to carry out your activities to the required standard.
You will be fully aware of any health, safety and environmental requirements, and the appropriate legislative and regulatory frameworks applicable to your area of responsibility. You will be required to ensure that safe working practices are maintained throughout, and will understand the responsibility you owe to yourself and others in the workplace.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations, directives and guidelines
- plan the most appropriate way for evaluating the research
- establish clear and precise criteria for evaluating the success of the research
- obtain accurate information on the research from all valid sources
- verify the research results by using the most appropriate methods
- assess the research against the evaluation criteria
- highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the research
- identify the impact of the research results on the activities of the organisation
- present the results of the evaluation to the appropriate people according to agreed procedures
- recommend future action that could be taken as a result of the evaluation
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to obtain the results of the research from the company information systems
- the methods that are available for evaluating research
- the types of research undertaken by your organisation
- the evaluation criteria that could be used for different types of research
- the methods that could be used for obtaining information on the research
- the sources of information that can be used in the research
- who should be involved in the evaluation process
- the methods that could be used for assessing and verifying different types of result
- the type of impact that the evaluation could have on the organisation
- the regulations, directives and guidelines which could impact on the results of the evaluation, and where to obtain information on them
- who requires information on evaluations, and the procedures for informing them
- the types of recommendation that could emerge from evaluations
- how to present recommendations
- the extent of your own authority, and to whom you should report if you have problems that you cannot resolve
Scope/range
