Testing post-production electronic components and circuits
Overview
This standard identifies the competences you need to carry out post-production tests on electronic components or circuits, in accordance with approved procedures. You will be required to carry out all preliminary essentials, such as obtaining risk assessment/permits to work and following clean work area protocols where appropriate. In addition, you will be expected to review and check the currency of the testing requirements, to set up and prepare the testing facilities for use, to conduct prescribed tests, to consider the implications of results obtained and to record and report your findings.
Your responsibilities will require you to comply with organisational policy and procedures for the testing activities undertaken and to report any problems with these activities or with the tools and equipment used, that you cannot personally resolve, or are outside your permitted authority, to the relevant people. You will be expected to work with a minimum of supervision, taking full responsibility for your own actions and for the quality and accuracy of the work that you carry out.
Your underpinning knowledge will provide a good understanding of your work and will provide an informed approach to applying test procedures for electronic components and circuits. You will understand the basic operating principles of the items being tested, their main parameters and their application, in adequate depth to provide a sound basis for carrying out the activities, recognising when circuits/components do not meet the required specification.
You will understand the safety precautions required when working in a test environment for electronic components and circuits and with the test equipment used. You will be required to demonstrate safe working practices throughout and will understand the responsibility you owe to yourself and others in the workplace.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1 work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations, directives and guidelines
P2 carry out the required tests to the relevant standard using appropriate tools and equipment
P3 set up and carry out the tests on electronic components and circuits using the correct procedures and within agreed timescales
P4 review the results and carry out further tests if necessary
P5 deal with problems within your control and report those that cannot be solved
P6 complete and store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
P7 leave the work area in a safe condition on completion of the activities, as per organisational requirements
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
K1 how to work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations, directives and guidelines
K2 the importance of wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and of keeping the work area clean and tidy
K3 what constitutes a hazardous voltage and how to reduce the risks of a phase to earth shock
K4 how to obtain the authority to conduct the tests, the relevant work areas and any specific permit-to-work procedures that are used
K5 how to effectively deal with emergency situations in relation to electric shock and safe isolation
K6 the clean work area protocols that should be used
K7 how to obtain and use data/specifications for the post-production tests
K8 how to read and interpret circuit diagrams and related symbols
K9 how to recognise and read component values and the polarity of electronic components
K10 how to check the calibration status of authorised test facilities and equipment to be used
K11 how to set up and use the range of test equipment items for the post-production tests
K12 the importance of using the appropriate test points in the circuit and how these are identified
K13 the types of tests used to verify the correct functioning of electronic equipment
K14 the basic operating principles of the electronic components/circuits being tested
K15 how to analyse and evaluate the results of the testing carried out
K16 the issues that can occur during the testing activities and the actions needed to deal with them
K17 the extent of your own responsibility and to whom you should report if you have problems that you cannot resolve
K18 how to access, use and maintain information to comply with organisational requirements and legislation
