Overview

This standard covers the competences required for leading the development of visual management systems.  It involves discussing and justifying the appropriate parts of the process or work area that will have visual controls and agree the key performance indicators which are to be displayed in the work area.  You will also be required to monitor the effectiveness of the visual management system and to check the quality of the information that is being displayed.

The information to be displayed will include such items as safety, zero defects, process concerns or corrective actions, performance measures, standard operating procedures (SOPs), workplace organisation, skills matrices, autonomous maintenance worksheets, parts control systems, problem resolution (such as Kaizen boards), shadow boards and standard work-in-progress (WIP) locations and quantities.

Your responsibilities will require you to comply with organisational policy and procedures for the activities undertaken, and to report any problems that you cannot solve, or that are outside your responsibility, to the relevant authority.  You will be expected to take full responsibility for your own actions within the activity, and for the quality and accuracy of the work that you carry out.

Your underpinning knowledge will provide a good understanding of your work, and will provide an informed approach to the techniques and procedures used.  You will need to understand the principles and procedures of visual management, and its application, in adequate depth to provide a sound basis for carrying out the activities to the required criteria.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations, directives and guidelines
  2. identify and justify the appropriate parts of the business, process or work area that will have visual controls
  3. approve and lead the making of changes to visual management systems
  4. agree the key performance indicators that will be displayed in the work area
  5. lead the production of and approve changes to standard operating procedures (SOPs), and visual controls in accordance with organisational requirements
  6. implement and monitor the changes to visual management systems
  7. monitor the effectiveness of the visual management system and check the quality of information being displayed

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations, directives and guidelines
  2. how to plan the resources and time needed to carry out the agreed activity
  3. the factors to be considered when selecting a visual management
  4. where to find the information required to develop a local visual management system
  5. the visual management systems available to create 'the visual workplace'
  6. how to differentiate between business performance measures and local performance measures
  7. the measures of performance in a lean business environment
  8. the application of measurement techniques required for communicating the visual management within an area and to others who may use the information
  9. the extent of your own authority, and to whom you should report in the event of problems that you cannot resolve

Scope/range


Scope Performance

1.    Lead the activities within your area of responsibility to include all of the following:

  1. set out an communicate the purpose of the improvement activities
  2. involve the team in planning how the improvement activity will be achieved
  3. ensure each team member has individual objectives and understands how these objectives contribute to the overall improvement objective
  4. provide advice and support the team to achieve both team and individual improvement objectives
  5. motivate the team to present their own improvement ideas
  6. encourage the team and/or individuals to take the lead where appropriate
  7. agree the implementation of the improvement ideas
  8. negotiate any physical and/or financial resources required to implement the improvement activity (where appropriate)
  9. monitor the progress of improvement activities
  10. deal with any organisational problems identified during the improvement activity

 

2.          Implement and monitor visual management systems that promote six of the following:

    1.       health and safety
    2.       quality/zero defects
    3.       process concerns or corrective actions
    4.       performance measures
    5.       standard operating procedures
    6.       workplace organisation
    7.       skills matrices
    8.       autonomous maintenance worksheets
    9.       parts/material control systems
    10. problem resolution (such as Kaizen boards)
    11. shadow boards
    12. standard work-in-progress (WIP) locations and quantities
    13. planning systems
    14. the delivery of effective meetings
    15. other specific information
