Overview

This standard covers the skills and knowledge required to dispose of wood by-products and waste.

You will follow safety, health and environmental procedures.

This standard is not suitable for waste disposal operators, nor does it cover the use of fork lift trucks. Separate standards are available for these cases.

This standard is about disposing of by-products and wastes. It involves:

  1. separating recoverable by-products and waste
  2. dealing with hazardous and non-hazardous materials, by-products and wastes

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. comply with safe working practice and health and safety requirements and legislation at all times
  2. separate out excess materials and recoverable by products following standard operating procedures
  3. handle materials and by-products safely following standard operating procedures
  4. separate wastes out in such a way that as little as possible good product is removed following standard operating procedures
  5. use the correct waste handling route as specified in safe working practices
  6. carry out waste removal with as little disruption as possible to the process   following standard operating procedures
  7. record the removal of waste following standard operating procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. hazards to people and the environment from mishandling and misprocessing of materials
  2. precautions and procedures applied when handling materials at each stage of the process and in storage
  3. containment and storage used for processed, part-processed materials, excess materials and recoverable by-products
  4. records kept about the removal and handling of waste and recoverable by-products
  5. risk control measures in place
  6. personal protective equipment requirements
  7. definitions of the following sorts of wastes – hazardous, non-hazardous, environmentally sensitive, environmentally inert
  8. procedures that apply to handling different sorts of wastes
  9. why wastes are removed during the course of a process as well as at the end
  10. why it is important to minimise the loss of good product when separating and removing wastes
  11. sorts of waste handling containers and equipment used
  12. information given on waste identification labels
  13. action to take if there is a spillage, leakage or emission of wastes
