Overview

​This standard covers the safe transportation and handling of installation equipment and materials.   

The correct type and quantity of installation equipment and materials have to be located and then transported so that they arrive at the location of the installation in good order.  They have to be stored at the installation site, handled and then positioned for use.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. comply with health and safety requirements, relevant statutory regulations, standard operating procedures and industry standards/codes of practice at all times
  2. select equipment and materials according to requirements of installations  
  3. load equipment and materials in a way that safely balances their weight, doesn't exceed safe working load of vehicles and ensures their protection during transit
  4. use suitable transportation methods to deliver equipment and materials according  to agreed schedules
  5. use suitable handling methods to prevent damage to equipment and materials, individuals, products and surrounding environment
  6. position equipment and materials according to standard operating procedures
  7. use suitable storage methods to ensure equipment and materials are protected
  8. identify any problems and deal with them according to standard operating procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. relevant health and safety requirements, relevant statutory regulations, standard operating procedures and industry standards/codes of practice that have to be complied with
  2. types of equipment and materials that need to be transported and handled
  3. identification markings for materials
  4. how to load different types of equipment and materials
  5. transportation methods used for different types of equipment and materials
  6. safe working loads of vehicles
  7. handling methods used for different types of equipment and materials
  8. damage that can occur as a result of handling equipment and materials incorrectly
  9. how different types of equipment and materials should be positioned for handling and installation
  10. problems that can occur during transportation and handling of equipment and materials and how to deal with them
