Overview

​This standard covers the skills and knowledge required to prepare specifications for assembly of fitted furniture in its final location.   

This involves:

  1. interpreting information
  2. evaluating what is involved
  3. preparing specifications
  4. specifying methods, techniques, tools, materials to be used
  5. working in ways that ensure your own and other's safety

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. comply with health and safety requirements and procedures at all times
  2. obtain specifications and requirements of the work following standard operating procedures
  3. assess types, qualities and quantities of material resources needed to meet requirements
  4. assess skill and knowledge base needed to carry out assemblies
  5. identify tools and equipment needed to meet requirements
  6. estimate time needed to achieve requirements 
  7. check required personnel, time, resources, tools and equipment are available to meet specifications
  8. identify suitable alternatives where requirements cannot be met in full 
  9. identify any problems which arise from requirements and report to appropriate person 
  10. agree options to be followed where choices are possible in meeting requirements
  11. specify outcome qualities which must be met following standard operating procedures
  12. specify measurements and tolerances following standard operating procedures
  13. use appropriate technical terms in the specification
  14. specify processes, methods and techniques to achieve required results 
  15. specify appropriate tools and equipment for work following standard operating procedures
  16. detail type and quality of resources to be used
  17. calculate allowed time for each stage of process and overall deadlines within which it must be completed following standard operating procedures
  18. provide examples of accurate specification of finished requirements
  19. record specifications following standard operating procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. steps, techniques, timings, skills, materials, tools and equipment needed to conduct furniture assembly/placement
  2. different types of skills and knowledge needed to carry out different processes within furniture assembly/placement
  3. handling characteristics of different species of wood and of wood composites used how these affect their use for different types of assembly
  4. identification and growth characteristics of different species of timber and its importance to tensile and compression strength, seasoning, durability, degradation, infestation and density
  5. typical time requirements for furniture assembly in location
  6. why it is important to check availability of different sorts of resources before committing to a piece of work
  7. constraints that can arise and why these might interfere with meeting requirements
  8. who to report problems to if you cannot solve them
  9. personal responsibilities with regard to health and safety
  10. conventions used in preparing work specifications and specifying measurements and tolerances for furniture assembly
  11. terminology used within furniture assembly
  12. uses of different methods, techniques and processes involved
  13. different materials used within furniture assembly, what they are used for, and why
  14. uses and descriptions of fixings, fittings and other attachments used in furniture assembly and in placement of furniture in location
