Overview

​This standard covers the skills and knowledge required to join wood components.

It covers:

  1. marking out components
  2. setting machinery, jigs and templates
  3. cutting joints
  4. joining components
  5. principles of joints used

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. comply with health and safety requirements and procedures at all times
  2. obtain specifications and requirements of the items to be produced following standard operating procedures
  3. obtain equipment and materials required to carry out the job following standard operating procedures
  4. check equipment is set up and in good working order following standard operating procedures and manufacturer's instructions
  5. check materials required are to specification and free from faults
  6. identify joints required and type of joint to be made following standard operating procedures
  7. mark out components following standard operating procedures
  8. set machinery, jigs and equipment following standard operating procedures and manufacturers' instructions
  9. cut joints to within required tolerances following standard operating procedures
  10. check joints fit accurately and are square following standard operating procedures
  11. strengthen joints following standard operating procedures
  12. deal with any joint faults that arise within the required timescales
  13. check finished joint components meet specified quality for alignment shape and grain orientation
  14. check joints and assembly are square following standard operating procedures

  1. standard operating procedures and how to apply these
  2. relevant health and safety responsibilities
  3. meaning of terms used in specifications
  4. how to check equipment is set up and is in good working order
  5. how to check materials and the common faults that can occur
  6. consequences of inaccurate measuring and cutting
  7. mechanics of joint construction
  8. limitations of different jointing components and alternative jointing techniques that can be used
  9. types of joints and their uses
  10. ways of strengthening joints
  11. how to use manual and powered tools and equipment safely in ways that protect yourself and others from risk
