Overview

This standard applies to individuals who generate technical designs in an industry context. The starting point may be an open or closed brief, a design concept, a spontaneous idea, modification of an existing product, or a point in an ongoing design process.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

**Identify and explore relevant ideas

**

  1. seek and explore ideas which are in line with the agreed design concept

  2. identify new and innovative design solutions and approaches from appropriate sources when initial selections are not sufficient

  3. develop design solutions which have the greatest potential for success to a stage where they are capable of evaluation and implementation

4. develop and use a range of criteria which are appropriate to evaluate different options and ideas

  1. select a preferred solution against agreed criteria and in consultation with relevant key clients/customers

6. apply relevant principles of functionality, ergonomics, aesthetics and sustainability to the development of different options
7. adjust and refine proposed design solution based on research, testing and reflection
8. evaluate design solutions to verify they are desirable, technically feasible and meet the design concept

9. establish and develop effective working relationships with key clients

  1. seek and integrate input and ideas from relevant others during the technical design process

  2. keep clients and others involved about progress of the design and related implications in appropriate ways

  3. negotiate and agree on any changed requirements or modifications using appropriate processes

  4. provide sufficient detail to support design solutions to enable clients and manufacturers to select and comment on them

  5. ​maintain a positive attitude when confronted by changing requirements and suggest viable alternatives​


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

1. the content of the design concept and design brief 2. the needs of target users from the design 3. copyright, moral rights and intellectual property issues and legislation that impact on design in the relevant context 4. elements and principles of design and their application in the relevant design application 5. key factors which signal particular genres and historical and contemporary styles  6. features of bespoke, batch and mass production methods and  economics,  7. different sources of existing design options and the work of design practitioners in the relevant context 8. sources of information that support the development of technical and other knowledge 9. how to evaluate the value of other people's ideas, whether they are junior or senior, and exploit them when appropriate 10. how to identify, assess and select new and existing design options consistent with the brief  11. how to develop new and innovative design options  12. creative thinking techniques that can be used to generate ideas  13. how your experience, skills, knowledge and judgement influence your creative input   14. the importance of design effectiveness 15. when to respect the parameters of the design concept and when to question them 16. current and emerging materials, tools, equipment, techniques and industry processes  17. current and emerging expectations and practice associated with sustainability 18. who to work with to verify that designs are technically feasible 19. how to work effectively within a constrained budget or schedule​
