Control gluing and finishing machinery

URN: PROCTN402
Business Sectors (Suites): Carton Manufacture
Developed by: Proskills
Approved on: 2020

Overview

This standard is for print finishers who work on gluing and finishing machinery. They will be expected to control the equipment whilst running production jobs.
You must show that you can:

  1. make gluing and finishing machinery ready for production
  2. run gluing and finishing machinery
    This involves:

    • identifying job requirements;
    • checking that gluing and finishing machinery is working properly;
    • checking that safety devices are working properly;
    • running gluing and finishing machinery safely;
    • adjusting settings, where necessary to maintain the required standards;
    • checking work meets required standards;
    • identifying faults and taking action to deal with them;
    • unloading and stacking finished products.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

Make gluing and finishing machinery ready for production

  1. check you have all the details required for work
  2. confirm you have enough materials of the right type to meet specifications
  3. report issues where materials provided are not correct or sufficient to the appropriate person(s)
  4. check the work area is safe and ready for production
  5. load materials to meet specifications
  6. make gluing and finishing machinery ready to meet specifications
  7. check materials are fed squarely without damage or distortion
  8. check mis-fed materials are detected by machine's devices
  9. check folds are made without damage or unacceptable creasing
  10. check glue is applied uniformly following standard operating procedures
  11. confirm glue penetration achieves required bonds
  12. produce samples and check they match specifications
  13. make adjustments when standards are not met
  14. report to the appropriate person(s) if the standards cannot be met
    Run gluing and finishing machinery
  15. run gluing and finishing machinery at the required speeds following safe working practices
  16. keep up the supply of materials throughout the run to meet specifications
  17. check that quality standards are met
  18. identify production faults which result in material failing to enter or leave the folding standards, folds out of square, too much or too little glue penetration and marking, damage or distortion to products
  19. correct faults within your area of responsibility
  20. report any faults that are not within your area of responsibility to the appropriate person(s)
  21. check machinery is safe to operate, once faults have been corrected
  22. record production and quality assurance details following standard operating procedures
  23. remove waste following standard operating procedures
  24. stack work following standard operating procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

Make gluing and finishing machinery ready for production

  1. details needed for work
  2. types and grades of carton board: characteristics, grain, sizes, weight, thickness, calliper and various finishes, storage conditions
  3. principles of folding and gluing for straight line, crash lock, 4 corner
  4. sequence of set up tasks for gluing and finishing machinery
  5. how to synchronise gluing and finishing standards
  6. types of adhesives, their uses and working temperatures
  7. risks associated with making ready gluing and finishing machinery and how to avoid them
  8. common gluing and finishing faults, what causes them and how to prevent them
  9. emergency shut down procedures

Run gluing and finishing machinery

  1. company's quality standards
  2. how grain direction affects gluing and finishing processes
  3. risks associated with running gluing and finishing machines and how to avoid them
  4. other faults that can occur during gluing and finishing
  5. how to recognise when you should correct faults yourself and when you should ask for help
  6. who to report faults to
  7. procedures for removal of waste from machines
  8. production and quality assurance records to keep

Scope/range

Materials
You must show that:
1 you obtain the following types of material:
1.1 input materials (which may be output from the printing process)
1.2 processing materials
 Machinery
2 you can confirm that machinery is in a fit condition by:
2.1 visual examination
2.2 test run
2.3 worker report
