Overview

This standard is about installing, positioning and securing electrification and plant equipment and components and making the necessary connections in accordance with policies and procedures. You will generally be performing single stage processes.

The types of equipment and components may include:

  • Contact and catenary wire
  • Insulators
  • Droppers

These may also be in one or more of the following areas:

  • Structural
  • Mechanical
  • Electrical

The equipment and components will be sub-sets of the following assets

  • Contact Systems (OLE, Conductor rails)
  • Power Supply Equipment

Types of installation activities may include:

  • Replacing insulators
  • Replacing droppers

At all times you will be working within the limits of your own responsibility and report any instances where the activities cannot be achieved to the relevant person(s).


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1 maintain safe working practices and comply with all relevant health and safety regulations, directives, and guidelines
P2 follow the relevant installation schedules and instructions to carry out the required activities
P3 ensure that all equipment and components are free from damage
P4 carry out the installation activities within the limits of your own authority
P5 carry out the installation activities in the specified sequence and within the timescales set by your organisation
P6 report any instances where the installation activities cannot be fully met or where there are identified defects outside the planned schedule
P7 complete relevant maintenance records in line with your organisation’s procedures
P8 dispose of waste materials in line with your organisation's procedures


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

K1 the relevant health and safety regulations, directives, guidelines, and safe working practices and procedures as defined by your organisation
K2 how to follow installation schedules and instructions that are approved by your organisation
K3 the types of defects that could occur in equipment and components
K4 your organisation's methods and techniques for carrying out installation activities relevant to your role
K5 the importance of carrying out installation activities in the specified sequence, within organisational timescales agreed
K6 your organisation's procedures for waste disposal
K7 the relevant reporting lines and procedures that are approved by your organisation
K8 the limits of your own authority and responsibility and those of others involved
