Overview
This standard is about arranging burial of the deceased. It involves complying with relevant regulation and legislation and agreeing and arranging the memorialisation of the grave or lair, and the burial of ashes/crematoria. It also involves making arrangements with all the relevant authorities.
This standard is for funeral directors, funeral director’s assistants and funeral arrangers.
When you have completed this standard you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to:
- Arrange the burial of the deceased
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
1. comply with relevant regulations, legislation and codes of practice which apply to the arrangement of the burial of the deceased
2. complete statutory and non-statutory documentation relevant to the burial of the deceased
3. advise your client of the types of burial ground available and select the one that matches their requirements
4. advise clients where to seek information when they enquire about natural burial grounds and home burials
5. identify the religious denomination, if any, of the deceased and establish with the client the impact of this on the burial arrangement
6. recognise the relevant burial rights of parishioners and requirements of the local authority when arranging the burial of the deceased
7. agree with the client the type of grave or lair required
8. ensure the arrangements you make adhere to the rights associated with graves or lairs
9. follow your funeral business’ procedures to arrange the burial with the all the relevant authorities
10. follow your funeral business’ designated procedures to record all relevant information relating to the burial
11. advise your client of the options available for memorialisation, including the potential problems which may occur
12. advise the client of fees levied by your funeral business, the burial site and other relevant parties associated with burial and memorialisation
13. advise clients, upon request, the process which will be followed to bury the deceased in a cemetery or churchyard
14. advise clients, upon request, the process which will be followed to bury or inter ashes/cremated remains

1. the relevant regulations, legislation and codes of practice which must be adhered to when arranging the burial of the deceased
2. the statutory and non-statutory documentation relevant to the burial of the deceased which must be completed during the arrangement
3. the types of burial grounds available and which can be offered to your clients
4. the potential impact on arrangements for burial which arise from the religious denomination of the deceased
5. where to find information about natural burial grounds and home burials
6. the burial rights to which parishioners may be entitled
7. the types of graves or lairs available
8. the rights of the client and deceased associated with graves and lairs
9. your funeral business’ procedure for arranging burials with all the relevant authorities
10. the requirements of all documentation relating to burials
11. the potential problems associated with memorialisation
12. the fee structure for your funeral business, the burial site and other relevant parties associated with burial and memorialisation
13. the process which applies to a cemetery/churchyard burial undertaken by your funeral business
14. the process for the burial/interment of cremated remains undertaken by your funeral business
