Overview
This standard is about arranging cremation for the deceased. It involves complying with relevant regulation and legislation and agreeing and arranging the memorialisation of ashes/cremated remains.
This standard is for funeral directors, funeral director’s assistants and funeral arrangers.
When you have completed this standard you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to:
- Arrange the cremation of the deceased
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
1. comply with relevant regulations, legislation and codes of practice which apply to the arrangement of the cremation for the deceased
2. complete statutory and non-statutory documentation relevant to the cremation of the deceased
3. advise the client or their nominated representative of their right to inspect statutory and non-statutory documentation relating to the cremation
4. identify the types of implants which must be removed from the deceased prior to cremation
5. correspond and maintain records with crematoria staff in accordance with relevant regulations, legislation, codes of practice and your funeral business’ policies and procedures
6. explain to your client the process of recovery of ashes/cremated remains and responsibility of the crematoria during recovery
7. explain the cremation process to your client
8. explain to clients who have lost a foetus the cremation procedure for the disposal of foetal remains
9. communicate options for the disposal of ashes/cremated remains to the client
10. follow your funeral business’ designated procedures relating to recording, release and secure retention of ashes/cremated remains after a cremation
11. follow your funeral business’ designated procedures for safe keeping of historic ashes/cremated remains
12. follow relevant regulations, legislation, codes of practice and your funeral business’ policies and procedures and client’s wishes for scattering ashes/cremated remains at the crematorium
13. follow relevant regulations, legislation, codes of practice and your funeral business’ policies and procedures for interment of ashes/cremated remains in a cemetery or churchyard
14. follow the procedures for placing ashes/cremated remains in a Columbarium when requested by your client
15. offer relevant cremation products to your client for retention or keepsake of ashes/cremated remains

9. the options available to your client for the disposal of ashes/cremated remains after the cremation
