Overview

This standard is about receiving the deceased into the care of a funeral business and ensuring that both the deceased and their personal effects, such as jewellery, are safely cared for once they have arrived at your funeral businesses’ premises.

This standard is for funeral directors, funeral arrangers, funeral attendants, funeral operatives and embalmers.

When you have completed this standard you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to:

  • Care of the deceased, jewellery and personal effects


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. follow relevant legislation and your funeral business’ policies and procedures for wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) 2. assess and use safe lifting and handling techniques at all times during the    care of the deceased 3. place the deceased in the specified location in your funeral business 4. complete internal written or electronic documentation correctly and legibly in line with relevant regulations, legislation, codes of practice and your funeral business' policies and procedures 5. record and store any jewellery and personal effects in line with relevant regulations, legislation, codes of practice and your funeral business' policies and procedures 6. make sure respect for the dignity of the deceased is shown at all times 7. monitor and maintain the temperature of the physical environment regularly in line with relevant regulations, legislation, codes of practice and your funeral business' policies and procedures 8. take precautions that are appropriate to avoid the spread of infection and disease by disposing of waste correctly according to relevant regulations, legislation, codes of practice and your funeral business' policies and procedures 9. maintain the work area and equipment for use in a clean and hygienic condition following your funeral business’ procedures 10. take remedial action and inform those who need to know when evidence of infectious conditions is identified

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

1. why you need to follow relevant legislation and your funeral business’ procedures for wearing personal protective equipment 2. how to perform a dynamic risk assessment and carry out safe lifting and handling techniques at all times  during the care of the deceased 3. how to place the deceased in the specified location within your funeral business 4. why you need to complete internal written or electronic documentation correctly and legibly in line with relevant regulations, legislation, codes of practice and your funeral business' policies and procedures 5. why you need to record and store any jewellery and personal effects in line with relevant regulations, legislation, codes of practice and your funeral business' policies and procedures 6. how to make sure respect for the dignity of the deceased is shown at all times and why this is important 7. the importance of monitoring and maintaining the temperature of the physical environment in line with relevant regulations, legislation, codes of practice and your funeral business' policies and procedures 8. what precautions to take to avoid the spread of infection and disease in your funeral business 9. your funeral business' policies and procedures for the storage and disposal of clinical waste 10. why you need to maintain the work area and equipment in a clean and hygienic condition 11. how and when to take remedial action to inform those who need to know that evidence of infectious conditions has been identified

Scope/range

When receiving the deceased’s person and effects into designated premises, you must show that you can achieve the outcome when dealing with each of the following:

1. Internal documentation:

2. Personal effects:
2.1. clothing
2.2. jewellery
2.3. personal papers
2.4. money and money equivalents
2.5 religious artefacts
2.6 other personal possessions

When maintaining an appropriate physical environment for the care and custody of the deceased person, you must show that you can achieve the outcome when dealing with each of the following:

1. Waste:
1.1. soiled clothing
1.2. disposable materials
1.3. cleaning materials

When preparing and maintaining work areas for the care of the deceased, you must show that you can achieve the outcome when dealing with each of the following:

1. Work area:
1.1. internal premises
1.2. external premises
2. Instruments and equipment:
2.1. clinical
2.2. non-clinical
3. Waste:
3.1. soiled clothing
3.2. disposable materials
3.3. cleaning materials
4. Personal protective clothing:
4.1. to protect your head and face
4.2. to protect your hands and feet
4.3. to protect your body

When completing first offices, you must show that you can achieve the outcome when dealing with each of the following:

1. Standard tests for death:
1.1. nervous system
1.2. circulatory system
1.3. respiratory system
2. Condition of the deceased:
2.1. no distressing appearance or hazards to health
2.2. distressing appearance, possibly hazardous to health
3. Work area:
3.1. internal premises
3.2. external premises
