Overview
This standard is about recognising and respecting the diversity of the deceased and clients throughout the process from first call, transfer and preparation, arrangement and management of the funeral.
This standard is for funeral directors, funeral director’s assistants, funeral arrangers, funeral attendants, funeral operatives and embalmers.
When you have completed this standard you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to:
- Recognise and respect the diversity of the deceased and clients
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
1. recognise and respect the diversity among clients, families and potential clients adhering to relevant legislation in areas including age, gender, class, culture, religion, belief, spirituality, disability, status, gender identity, sexuality, sexual identity and socio-economic background
2. acknowledge and respect the values, beliefs and social context in which the deceased has lived their life and use this information to facilitate extended care and support for clients
3. demonstrate awareness and respect for the way in which cultural or belief issues may impact upon the removal and transfer, care, presentation and preparation of the deceased
4. consider the values and beliefs of the deceased and the client when arranging the funeral, incorporating relevant funeral rites and funeral practice
5. arrange the funeral respecting the diversity of the client and the deceased
6. seek assistance if diversity requirements of the client or the deceased are beyond your own knowledge and understanding
7. communicate effectively with the client and, where relevant, with family members through the assistance of other professionals, interpreter and bilingual services and technology or equipment to assist in the communicationÂ
8. liaise and work collaboratively with clients and third party professionals
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the need to recognise, respect and embrace the diversity among clients, families and potential clients in line with relevant legislation in areas including age, gender, class, culture, religion, belief, spirituality, disability, status, gender identity, sexuality, sexual identity and socio-economic background
- how to facilitate extended care and support in a manner that demonstrates respect for the deceased, and the cultural and social context in which they have lived their life
- how to demonstrate awareness and respect of the way in which cultural and belief issues may impact upon the removal and transfer, care, preparation and presentation of the deceased
- how the diversity, values and beliefs of the deceased and client apply to funeral rites and funeral practice
- the importance of respecting the diversity of background of the client and the deceased
- the extent and limits of your own cultural understanding and when and from where to seek advice or support
- how to communicate effectively with the client and, where relevant, with family members through the assistance of other professionals, interpreter and bilingual services and technology or equipment to assist in the communication with your client
- the significance of working collaboratively with clients and third party professionals
