Overview

This standard is about working safely when operating airside. This involves being able to recognise airside hazards and understand the associated risks. This also involves understanding your own personal responsibilities in maintaining a safe environment, following the airline and airport’s standard operating procedures and adhering to health and safety legislation.

This standard is for all cabin crew and senior cabin crew operating airside.

When you have completed this standard, you will be able to demonstrate your knowledge of and ability to
• Recognise hazards and minimise risks when operating airside


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. Identify where to find relevant information on the airline and airport's health and safety standard operating procedures and current airport byelaws, and how they affect you, the wider team and your operational area 2. Identify the main causes of airside accidents and incidents 3. Recognise the potential consequences of not following airside safety procedures 4. Report accidents, incidents and near misses to the commander in line with the airline's procedures 5. Recognise the types of airside signs and markings and their importance 6. Maintain your own, customers’ and colleagues’ health, safety and welfare when operating airside 7. Take action to deal with any airside hazards that occur and minimise risks in line with the airline’s procedures and within your limits of authority

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

1. The airline and airport's health and safety standard operating procedures and relevant airport byelaws, and where to find them 2. The types of consequences of not operating safely in an airport environment 3. The types of airside hazards and how they can be prevented 4. The common causes of airside accidents and incidents 5. Your organisation’s procedures and current legislative requirements for reporting and recording incidents and accidents 6. The importance of remaining vigilant to risks within your area of responsibility and following safety rules 7. The effects of adverse weather (wind, snow, heat, sun and ice) and precautions to take 8. The location, meaning and significance of airside signs and markings 9. The types dangers from aircraft and from vehicles other than aircraft 10. The actions to take to prevent injury from aircraft 11. The types of personal protective equipment (PPE) and when to wear it in line with relevant legislative and organisational requirements 12. The dangers from foreign object debris (FOD) and the importance of keeping areas clean and tidy at all times 13. The dangers from birds and other wild animals and the importance of making sure that that the area does not attract them 14. The emergency areas such as fire assembly points, areas for emergency response vehicles and emergency response procedures and protocols 15. The airline’s procedures and your limits of authority for dealing with airside hazards and minimising risks

Airside layout:

a) Where the ramp area is: the surface area from the building to the rear of the aircraft stands including the apron
b) Operating areas for aircraft, vehicles and pedestrians

Dangers from aircraft include:

a) Jet blast
b) Ingestion
c) Being hit
d) Excessive noise
e) Propellers
f) Rotors
g) Downdraft

Actions to take to prevent injury form approaching aircraft:

a) Check that it is chocked
b) Check that anti-collision lights are off
c) Check rotors stationary

Personal Protective Equipment:

a) Ear protection
b) High visibility clothing
c) Other personal protective equipment
