Overview

This standard is about monitoring and maintaining the security of the aircraft and the passengers. It involves instructing and monitoring cabin crew carrying out security checks throughout all phases of the flight and remaining vigilant at all times. You must show that you can identify potential threats to security and initiate and follow appropriate procedures in response to these threats.

This standard is for senior cabin crew.

When you have completed this standard, you will be able to demonstrate your knowledge of and ability to:
• Monitor and maintain security on board aircraft


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. Brief cabin crew about all relevant security matters before the flight 2. Manage and undertake security checks, searches and operations in line with the airline’s procedures and destination specific legal requirements 3. Manage cabin crew while performing routine and emergency security procedures in line with the airline's procedures and destination specific legal requirements 4. Communicate and co-ordinate with flight crew on routine and emergency security procedures 5. Observe passengers and identify potential threats to security 6. Where required, check the total number of passengers on board at the relevant times and check this against the records 7. Identify and manage security risks in line with the airline's procedures and destination specific legal requirements 8. Manage cabin crew not following security procedures in line with airline policy and procedure 9. Manage and undertake aircraft searches in the event of an identified a security threat or breach in line with the airline's procedure 10. Identify and manage suspicious items in line with the airline’s procedures 11. Inform flight crew of instances of potential or actual breaches of security 12. Manage security incidents involving passengers in line with your airline's procedure 13. Complete and submit documentation relating to security in line with airline procedures and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations 14. Manage access to and egress from the flight deck in line with the airline’s procedures

You need to know and understand:

1. The airline's routine and emergency security procedures pre-flight to disembarkation 2. The importance of complying with destination specific legal requirements 3. Actual and potential threats to security and the airline's procedures for dealing with them 4. Routine and emergency security checklists 5. How to observe passengers and identify potential threats to security 6. How to manage security incidents involving passengers 7. How to manage cabin crew not following security procedures 8. The airline’s procedures for organisational identification (ID) 9. The airline’s procedures and the CAA’s regulations relating to completing and submitting documentation 10. The importance of managing access to and egress from the flight deck door
