Overview

This standard is about the health, safety and hygiene practices and procedures that must be followed and maintained during all phases of the flight. It involves leading and supervising a team in carrying out routine and non-routine activities. You must show that you can provide information to passengers, monitor passengers' behaviour, monitor equipment and respond appropriately to situations that pose a threat to health, safety and hygiene.

This standard is for senior cabin crew.

When you have completed this standard, you will be able to demonstrate your knowledge of and ability to:

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. Provide passengers and crew with all necessary routine health and safety and destination specific information and instructions in line with the airline’s procedures 2. Draw passengers' attention to the safety cards 3. Monitor passengers from boarding to disembarkation to make sure they follow health and safety notices, regulations and guidelines 4. Manage passengers who are not following health and safety notices, regulations and guidelines in line with the airline’s procedures 5. Observe passengers to identify potential victims of trafficking and, if necessary, take action in line with the airline’s procedures 6. Monitor the crews’ health and well-being from pre-flight to disembarkation and take action to support them in line with the airline’s procedures 7. Manage problems involving crew who are not following health, safety and hygiene rules, in line with the airline’s procedures 8. Confirm your own and the crew’s activities comply with all flight and duty time limitations (FTL) and rest requirements 9. Manage all health and safety accidents or incidents in line with the airline’s procedures 10. Confirm that all health and safety emergency equipment is available, accessible and operational 11. Manage faulty safety equipment in line with the airline’s procedures 12. Confirm access to emergency exits is maintained from boarding to disembarkation 13. Manage the compliance of health and safety standards throughout all crew and passenger areas in line with the airline’s procedures 14. Manage all identified dangerous goods in line with the airline’s procedures 15. Complete required documentation in line with the airline’s procedures 16. Confirm all cabin checks are completed and received by flight crew at relevant stages of the flight 17. Manage all passenger services and in-flight operations according to the airline's health, safety and hygiene procedures

How to recognise and manage staff health and well-being issues from pre-flight to disembarkation in line with the airline’s procedures 9. The airline’s documentation relating to health and safety 10. Your responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and CAA regulations 11. The maintenance requirements of health and safety equipment - where to find it, what it does and how to maintain it 12. How to manage potential breakdowns, hazards and unhygienic practices or conditions 13. The airline’s pre-flight health and safety checks, inspections and operations including reporting checks to the captain and checking the emergency equipment 14. The airline's health, safety and hygiene procedures for passenger services including preparing food and drink, serving food and drink, selling goods, operation of in-flight equipment and systems and manual lifting and carrying

In flight equipment**
Any equipment used by crew and passengers on board an aircraft, e.g., communications equipment, air vents, seat controls, call light. Not all aircraft will be fitted with all equipment, e.g. entertainment systems.

Trafficking in persons (ICAO guidance)**
Often, the expression “trafficking in persons” brings to mind sexual exploitation. However, there are many other forms of trafficking by means of a threat, either real or perceived. Some of the various types of trafficking include: a) sexual exploitation, including the exploitation of the prostitution of others; b) child sexual exploitation and prostitution; c) child soldiery; d) trafficking in persons for the explicit purpose of organ removal (which is not donated); e) forced labour (in mines, fields, factories, fishing vessels, etc.); f) selling children for illegal adoption; g) exploited domestic workers (e.g. private residences); h) debt bondage and servitude; i) forced marriage; j) forced begging and crimes on the street; k) forced criminality; and l) other forms of forced exploitation and slavery like practices.
