Overview

This standard is about communicating with passengers and crew on-board an aircraft using a range of equipment, such as a PA system, applying relevant aviation codes, following airline standards and procedures. You must be able to communicate with passengers and crew members during routine operations and emergency situations.

This standard is for all cabin crew.

When you have completed this standard you will have demonstrated your understanding of and ability to:
• Operate equipment to communicate on board an aircraft


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. Select and operate communications equipment in line with the airline’s procedures 2. Communicate information to members of the flight crew and cabin crew using required codes and vocabulary in line with the airline’s procedures 3. Communicate information to passengers, including making passenger announcements, in line with the airline’s standards and procedures 4. Communicate in a way that demonstrates respect and promotes the airline’s values 5. Follow the airline’s alternative procedures for communicating in the event of equipment failure or emergency situations 6. Identify and respond to communications issues within the limits of your responsibility and seek assistance from crew members as required 7. Report faulty or broken communications equipment in line with the airline's procedures 8. Communicate with the flight crew and other members of the cabin crew and passengers in an emergency situation in line with the airline's procedures

You need to know and understand:

1. The aviation terminology to use when communicating on board an aircraft 2. The types of communications equipment on board different aircraft and their purpose 3. How to operate communications equipment specific to the aircraft type 4. The airline’s standard operating procedures for communicating with passengers and crew 5. Types of communication requirements suitable to passenger needs 6. How to adapt your communication to meet the needs of different situations 7. The types of communications issues which may arise and how to deal with them 8. When and how to seek assistance from crew members 9. The airline's procedures for operating communication's equipment in an emergency situation 10. The airline's procedures for reporting faulty or broken communications equipment
