This standard is about promoting a professional image when providing aviation ground security services. This involves presenting and conducting yourself according to your organisation’s requirements, and promoting and representing your organisation’s values and brand. This also involves using feedback to improve your own performance and establishing professional working relationships with your colleagues.

This standard is for those undertaking aviation ground security activities.

When you have completed this standard, you will be able to demonstrate your knowledge of and ability to:
• Provide medical care and advice and administer first aid on an aircraft


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. Recognise the passenger/crew member who needs medical attention 2. Undertake an initial assessment of the passenger's/crew member's condition and / or injury primary survey (ABC) and gather associated information 3. Respond to the first aid incident or emergency in accordance with your training and equipment available on the aircraft 4. Recognise potential hazards at the scene of a first aid incident or emergency and take action according to the airline’s procedures and relevant legal requirements 5. Identify whether qualified medical help is needed and take action to seek that help in line with the airline’s procedures 6. Monitor the passenger's/crew member's condition regularly and take action in line with the airline’s procedures, as required 7. Recognise and report signs and symptoms of infectious diseases 8. Keep flight crew and colleagues informed of all serious medical conditions as required 9. Stow and/ or dispose of equipment and materials after use in line with the airline’s procedures 10. Report equipment and materials that have been used to respond the first aid incident or emergency in line with the airline’s procedures 11. Complete required documentation in line with the airline’s procedures and current legal requirements

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

1. The principles and aims of first aid provision 2. How to recognise when a passenger or crew member requires medical attention 3. The airline’s procedures for assessing and treating passengers and crew members 4. The available protective clothing, and how and when to use it 5. Where the emergency equipment is, and how to check, maintain and use it 6. How to stow emergency equipment and report if it has been used 7. The effect altitude has on the human body 8. Risk of contact with infectious diseases and means to reduce such risks 9. How to recognise and respond to medical emergencies according to your training, and the importance of doing so 10. Conditions that need therapeutic oxygen and how to administer it 11. When and how to use cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques 12. When and how to place an individual in a recovery position 13. The airline’s procedures for responding to the death of a passenger or crew member on board an aircraft 14. The airline’s procedures for seeking qualified medical help including using the radio to contact ground-based organisations 15. The importance of keeping flight crew and colleagues informed of all serious medical conditions 16. Relevant legal and airline limits on medical care and first aid 17. The airline’s procedures and relevant legal requirements for completing documentation in relation to medical care and first aid on board the aircraft

Scope/range

g) fractures and soft tissue injuries
 
In-flight medical emergencies and associated first-aid covering at least:
a) asthma
b) stress and allergic reactions
c) shock
d) diabetes
e) choking
f)  epilepsy
g) childbirth
g) stroke
i)  heart attack
