Overview
This standard is about responding to abnormal, dangerous or emergency situations and using emergency equipment. You must be able to provide guidance and support for passengers and ensure the airline’s emergency and evacuation procedures are followed to maintain the safety of everyone on board.
This standard is for members of the cabin crew.
When you have completed this standard, you will be able to demonstrate your knowledge of and ability to:
• Respond to abnormal, dangerous or emergency situations
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
1. Identify, acknowledge and respond to actual and potential abnormal, dangerous or emergency situations according to the airline’s procedures
2. Respond to an alert immediately, in line with the airline's procedures
3. Take the required action to deal with the situation in line with your training and the airline's procedures and relevant legal requirements
4. Inform the senior crew member and / or flight crew of the situation according to the airline’s procedures
5. Provide instructions for passengers and manage their response to the situation in line with the airline's procedures
6. Locate and operate emergency equipment as soon as it is needed in line with the airline’s procedures
7. Seek or give assistance in using the emergency equipment, where required
8. Stow emergency equipment in line with the airline’s procedures after you have used it
9. Report equipment and materials that have been used to respond the emergency in line with the airline’s procedures
10. Inform passengers of the evacuation procedures at the appropriate time following the Commander’s instructions
11. Seek assistance if passengers will not or cannot follow emergency instructions or evacuation procedures in line with the airline's procedures
12. Evacuate the aircraft in line with the airline's procedures
13. Operate exits and escape equipment according to the airline's procedure, and assist passengers where necessary
14. Seek assistance from, or provide assistance to, other crew members where necessary
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
1. The symptoms and causes of abnormal, dangerous or emergency situations and airline's procedures for responding to them
2. The airline's procedures and emergency drills in abnormal, dangerous or emergency situations
3. The airline's evacuation procedures for passengers and crew
4. Circumstances under which you should take direct control of the emergency or evacuation
5. How to prevent fire, smoke and fumes and other abnormal, dangerous or emergency situations
6. Types of emergency alarms
7. Oxygen systems, including how to use them by hand
8. Bracing positions for cabin crew and passengers
9. Where the emergency equipment is, and how to check, maintain and use it
10. How to stow equipment and report if it has been used
11. Types of panic and how to deal with them, including passenger crowd control and evacuation techniques
12. Your organisation's procedures for dealing with passengers not following instructions
13. How to evacuate the aircraft on the ground and on water
14. How to assist passengers with specific needs
15. The location, function and operation of routine and emergency exits and escape equipment including operation of automatic and manual exits
16. The actions to take if equipment and exits do not work properly
